Recent reports indicate that both nations have experienced their driest July on record, compounding the effects of a notably parched spring and early summer. As a result, hosepipe bans now affect over 25 million residents, with water companies struggling to meet heightened demand amid these unprecedented conditions.
Widespread Hosepipe Bans Implemented
In response to the escalating water crisis, nine water companies have instituted hosepipe bans, prohibiting residents from using hoses for activities such as watering gardens, washing cars, or filling swimming pools. Meanwhile, reservoirs in Wales are declining, though Welsh Water maintains that its resource position is still relatively strong. Groundwater, which is essential in areas like southeastern England, is responding more slowly to the dry conditions. Although groundwater levels were generally normal due to replenishment from winter rainfall, they have been adversely affected by a drier spring.

The Met Office projects that the UK will likely endure drier summers as climate change progresses, although a clear trend has not yet emerged. Richard Allan, a climate science professor at the University of Reading, explained that a warmer atmosphere creates greater moisture demand, leading to quicker depletion of soil moisture, river water, and reservoir stocks.

A recent review of the water sector in England and Wales has revealed significant underinvestment in infrastructure, prompting calls for urgent improvements. In a bid to secure future water supplies, the government, alongside various water companies, has announced plans to construct nine new reservoirs in England by 2050, with one already underway in Havant Thicket, Hampshire. However, the EA has cautioned that measures such as hosepipe bans and the introduction of smart meters may be required to better manage water usage and mitigate leakage issues.
