New Seahorse Species Named in Honour of UBC Conservation Pioneer Amanda Vincent

A remarkable new species of seahorse has been named after Professor Amanda Vincent, a leading figure in marine conservation and a co-founder of Project Seahorse at the University of British Columbia. This recognition not only highlights her lifelong dedication to the protection of seahorses and their habitats but also underscores the importance of sustainable fishing practices in preserving marine biodiversity.

A Lifelong Commitment to Conservation

For over three decades, Amanda Vincent has been at the forefront of seahorse research and conservation efforts. Measuring approximately 16 cm in length, this seahorse features a distinctive short snout, a small crown atop its head, and unique spines along its body. While the specifics of its habitat and behaviour remain largely unexplored, Vincent is eager to learn more about this remarkable creature.

“I’m thrilled. It’s pretty wonderful to wake up and open your email and discover just two days ago that there’s a creature on the side of the world that is beautiful and wonderful and special and has your name on it,” Vincent expressed, reflecting on the honour of having a species named after her.

Future Research and Conservation Efforts

Despite the excitement surrounding this discovery, Vincent acknowledges the challenges ahead. Approximately one-third of all seahorse species face threats from habitat loss and unsustainable fishing practices. “Which is to get in the field, with my glorious seahorse, and actually learn about its ecology and its vulnerabilities, and its conservation possibilities and try to make sure that all is well,” she stated, outlining her next mission.

With each new species found, the scientific community gains a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems. “We’ve got new approaches, new tools, new colleagues involved,” Vincent noted. “So, it’s very exciting to see that we are changing the trajectory by the passion and hard work of a lot of people.”
