In a delightful blend of family outing and artistic expression, photographer Bertram Greenhough seized a moment of tranquillity amidst the bustling Brighton beach, creating a stunning image that resonates with warmth and simplicity. Armed only with his iPhone, Greenhough immortalised a scene that encapsulates the essence of summer in the British seaside town.

A Day at the Beach

On a sun-soaked June day, Bertram Greenhough, alongside his six-year-old daughter Audrey, embarked on a leisurely exploration of Brighton, playing the role of tourists in their own city. Their journey began with a visit to the quirky upside-down house near the i360 observation tower, before they set their sights on the iconic Palace Pier, where Greenhough promised Audrey a well-deserved ice-cream treat.

As they strolled through the crowded beachfront, the vibrant atmosphere buzzed with laughter and excitement. Yet, amidst the throngs of sunbathers and holidaymakers, Greenhough’s keen eye caught sight of a serene lifeguard shelter, standing out like a beacon of calmness. “I often walk around Brighton with my SLR film camera – very hipster of me,” he mused, reflecting on his usual photography habits. “However, that day I only had my phone. But, as the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you.”

Capturing the Decisive Moment

As a photographer, Greenhough understands the fleeting nature of opportunity. The lifeguard, perched high above the beachgoers, became the focal point of a composition that was both minimalist and striking. “I saw this calm, minimalist scene suspended above thousands of people,” he recalled. In a moment of spontaneity, he turned to Audrey and exclaimed, “Oh, look at that, I need to take a picture!” Although his daughter may not have grasped the significance, Greenhough recognised that this was a “decisive moment” that demanded to be captured.

Just as quickly as the moment was there, it slipped away; the lifeguard shifted, and the scene’s harmony began to dissolve. But Greenhough had already pressed the shutter, freezing the tranquility of the moment for posterity.

The Art of Editing

Later that evening, after indulging in classic Mr Whippy ice-cream adorned with a flake, Greenhough returned to his image. Utilising Lightroom, he made several adjustments to enhance his work. “I tend to use presets as a starting point,” he explained, noting the contrast between his vision and the camera’s interpretation. “I increased the vibrancy of the yellows and reds, and adjusted the hue of the blue sky to complement the other two colours.”

The final result was not just a photograph, but a visual representation of the peace and security that can often be found in moments of stillness amidst chaos. “I hope it gives people a sense of peace and security,” Greenhough added. “Perhaps, like me, they can feel the warmth of the sun.”

Why it Matters

Greenhough’s photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that can be found in everyday life. In an era dominated by fast-paced digital imagery and the incessant rush of modern existence, his ability to capture a tranquil moment encourages us to pause and appreciate the world around us. This image is not merely a testament to the capabilities of a smartphone camera; it is an invitation to embrace the simplicity of life and find joy in fleeting experiences. In doing so, Greenhough not only shares a slice of his day but also reconnects us with the warmth of human experience.
