The new species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, was discovered following the examination of specimens collected from the Indian Ocean. Measuring approximately 16 cm in length, this seahorse is distinguished by its short snout, a small crown atop its head, and spines that run along its body. Although its primary habitat has been identified, much about its behaviour and ecology remains unknown, as field studies have yet to be conducted.
“I’m thrilled. It’s pretty wonderful to wake up and open your email and discover just two days ago that there’s a creature on the other side of the world that is beautiful and wonderful and special and has your name on it,” Vincent expressed, reflecting on the joy of this unexpected accolade.

With the naming of the seahorse, Dr Vincent is now focused on her next research mission. She aims to delve deeper into understanding the new species’ ecology, vulnerabilities, and conservation needs. “I want to learn about its ecology and its vulnerabilities and try to ensure that all is well,” she said, emphasising the importance of proactive conservation measures.
Currently, it is estimated that one-third of all seahorse species are threatened, underscoring the urgency of Vincent’s work. “With every discovery comes more understanding and knowledge,” she remarked, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the global marine research community. “We’ve got new approaches, new tools, and new colleagues involved. It’s very exciting to see that we are changing the trajectory through the passion and hard work of many people.”
