As California gears up for a potentially tumultuous winter, climate scientists are ringing alarm bells about the arrival of a “super” El Niño, a climate phenomenon characterised by significantly elevated sea surface temperatures. Forecasts indicate that this year’s El Niño could be the most intense of the century, promising an increased likelihood of heavy rainfall and coastal flooding across the western United States. This weather pattern is expected to develop further in the autumn, with impacts persisting into early spring 2027.

A Historic Weather Pattern

El Niño occurs when changes in wind patterns enable warmer ocean waters to spread across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. This phenomenon disrupts typical weather patterns and is linked to a range of climatic consequences. Climate models suggest that California faces a staggering 70% to 100% chance of experiencing above-average rainfall along its coastline this winter, according to predictions from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist from UCLA, addressed the concerns during a virtual town hall hosted by California State Senator Mike McGuire. He emphasised that while El Niño does not guarantee specific outcomes, the current predictions significantly tilt the odds toward a wetter winter. “This will likely increase the likelihood of coastal flooding, particularly during intense storm events or king tides,” Swain stated.

California has a turbulent history with El Niño events. The catastrophic 1982-83 El Niño resulted in the destruction of 33 oceanfront homes and caused damage to 3,000 others, as recorded by the California Coastal Commission. Similarly, the 1997-98 season brought severe flooding and led to 17 storm-related fatalities. During the El Niño winter of 2015-16, officials reported unprecedented coastal erosion, leaving beaches vulnerable and shorelines at risk.

Mark Merrifield from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography highlighted the looming threats, stating, “With less beach in front of the coastline, the waves will have an even greater impact, increasing the likelihood of flooding and erosion.”

While the super El Niño is anticipated to bring significant precipitation to California, it will not resolve long-standing drought issues in the southwestern United States, where reservoirs remain alarmingly low. Dr Joel Lisonbee, a senior associate scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, warned that while exceptional rainfall could emerge, it would likely come with disastrous consequences, including flooding and loss of life.

Coastal regions across the Gulf and East Coasts are also bracing for increased rainfall, with forecasts indicating that central and southern Florida may experience heightened storm activity, including tornadoes and floods, during this El Niño cycle. Historically, the 1998 El Niño winter witnessed a devastating outbreak of tornadoes in Florida, resulting in 42 fatalities and over $100 million in damages.

Preparing for the Future

Climate experts stress that not all El Niño events will manifest in the same way. Each occurrence can produce a diverse range of outcomes, from hurricanes and heavy precipitation to extreme heat and drought conditions. Merrifield noted that while El Niño is a natural climatic cycle, its effects should serve as a critical “stress test” for California, revealing vulnerabilities that the state will likely face as climate change unfolds.

“This is an opportunity to identify our weaknesses and strategise our preparedness,” he said, adding that the looming super El Niño offers a sobering glimpse into the potential realities of climate change.
