A newly identified species of seahorse has been named in honour of Amanda Vincent, a leading figure in marine conservation and a professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This recognition underscores her decades-long commitment to preserving seahorses and their habitats, as well as advocating for sustainable fishing practices.

Vincent, who co-founded UBC’s Project Seahorse, has dedicated her career to understanding and protecting these unique marine creatures. She has been instrumental in advancing research, conservation efforts, and policies aimed at preventing the overharvesting of seahorses, which are often exploited for traditional medicine, aquarium displays, and souvenirs.
“Fishing is necessary, fishing is vital, but it must be conducted in sustainable and sensible ways,” she stated, highlighting the balance that needs to be struck between human activity and ecological preservation. Discovery of Hippocampus amandavincentae
The new seahorse species, named Hippocampus amandavincentae, was discovered after researchers studied specimens from the Indian Ocean. Vincent expressed her joy upon receiving the news, stating, “It’s pretty wonderful to wake up and open your email and discover just two days ago that there’s a creature on the side of the world that is beautiful and wonderful and special and has your name on it.”
This remarkable seahorse measures approximately 16 cm in length and features a short snout, a distinctive crown atop its head, and spines adorning its body. However, much about the species remains unknown, as it has yet to be observed in its natural habitat.
Future Research and Conservation Efforts
Looking ahead, Vincent is eager to expand her research. “My next mission is to get in the field, with my glorious seahorse, and actually learn about its ecology, vulnerabilities, and conservation possibilities,” she shared. This fieldwork will be crucial in ensuring the survival of the species and understanding its role within the marine ecosystem.
Currently, around one-third of seahorse species are considered threatened, underscoring the importance of ongoing research and conservation. Vincent remains optimistic, noting, “We’ve got new approaches, new tools, and new colleagues involved. It’s very exciting to see that we are changing the trajectory through the passion and hard work of many.”
