In a remarkable conservation effort, Rhossi, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, is set to embark on a 5,000-mile journey back to his natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico. Rescued from a Welsh beach in December 2023, Rhossi was found in a near-fatal state, but thanks to the dedicated care of staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo, he has regained his strength and is now ready for release.
An Urgent Rescue Mission
Rhossi’s odyssey began when he was discovered by a dog named Meg on a beach near Rhosneigr, where he was suffering from “cold-stunned” conditions caused by a drastic temperature drop in the water. Staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo promptly intervened, providing essential care that helped him recover. Over the past two and a half years, Rhossi has tripled in size, growing from a mere 1 kg to an impressive 21 kg.
Matt Davidson, the zoo’s curator, explained the meticulous preparations for Rhossi’s journey. “We’ve built a special temperature-controlled crate to ensure he remains comfortable during transit,” he noted. The complexity of the operation involves not only the physical logistics but also intricate paperwork across international borders, underscoring the lengths to which conservationists will go to protect endangered species.
The Journey Ahead
Rhossi’s journey will commence with a helicopter ride from Anglesey to London, followed by a cargo flight to Houston, Texas. Davidson elaborated on the unique methods employed to keep Rhossi in optimal condition: “We use KY Jelly, a gentle lubricant, to keep his skin and eyes moist, as well as Vaseline for his shell. It’s a delicate balance, and we need to ensure he doesn’t dry out or dehydrate.”
Despite the logistical challenges, the team remains optimistic. Davidson shared a light-hearted moment, recalling his visits to local chemists to stock up on essential supplies: “I’ve had to explain myself more than once while checking out with several tubes of KY Jelly and tubs of Vaseline.”
An Emotional Farewell
The impending release is not just a logistical milestone; it is also an emotional one for the team at the Anglesey Sea Zoo. Frankie Hobro, the zoo’s owner, expressed the bittersweet nature of Rhossi’s departure. “Cold-stunned turtles rarely survive without specialist help. It’s been a long road, and while we are thrilled for him to return to the wild, it’s hard to say goodbye. We’ve built a bond over these two years, and a piece of us will always be with him as he swims off into the Caribbean.”
Kemp’s ridley turtles are critically endangered, with their nesting sites limited to just two beaches in Mexico and one in Texas, USA. The zoo hopes Rhossi’s release will contribute to the species’ survival, marking a small but significant victory for conservation efforts.
