In a troubling development for the American West, Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has fallen to its lowest recorded water level since its inception nearly 90 years ago. As of 7 August 2026, the reservoir, located on the Arizona-Nevada border, reached an alarming height of just 1,040.4 feet (317.1 metres) above sea level, narrowly surpassing the previous low recorded on 28 July 2022. This situation highlights the escalating water crisis affecting millions across the region, particularly as the Colorado River, which serves as a lifeline for approximately 40 million people, struggles to cope with increasing demands and diminishing supplies.
