Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has plunged to its lowest water level in nearly 90 years, marking a critical moment in the ongoing water crisis affecting the American West. Recent data reveals that water levels dipped to 1,040.4 feet (317.1 metres) above sea level, surpassing the previous record set in July 2022. Meanwhile, Lake Powell’s diminishing levels have made it increasingly difficult for boats to access the water, leading to the closure or relocation of boat ramps.

The federal Bureau of Reclamation has reported that nine of the 54 western reservoirs monitored recently hit their lowest levels in the past 30 years, indicating a widespread crisis rather than an isolated incident. With forecasts suggesting that Lake Mead’s levels will continue to decline throughout the year, the urgency for decisive action is palpable.
