The U.K. and France are preparing for their fifth heat wave of the summer, as a prolonged stretch of scorching temperatures continues to affect much of Europe. Starting Tuesday, Météo-France is forecasting highs nearing 40°C (104°F) in southeastern France, while an amber heat health alert will be in effect across much of England, with temperatures expected to reach 36°C (96.8°F) later this week. This wave of intense heat follows a series of record-setting temperatures that have led to dire consequences for health and the environment across the continent.
A Summer of Unprecedented Heat
Since May, Europe has been grappling with extreme heat that has not only broken temperature records but has also significantly impacted public health and the environment. The ongoing heat has been linked to a surge in wildfires, severe drought conditions, and thousands of heat-related fatalities. According to climate data, this year is currently the third hottest on record, trailing only 2024 and 2025. Scientists warn that with the combination of human-induced climate change and a substantial El Niño event, 2026 could potentially become the hottest year ever documented.
In July, the average sea surface temperature across extrapolar oceans reached an unprecedented 20.96°C (69.73°F), surpassing the previous record set in 2023. This increase has been partly attributed to conditions in the equatorial Pacific, leading to alarming implications for climate stability.
Rising Temperatures and Their Consequences
The impact of the heat wave has been particularly severe in Western Europe, where the average temperature for June and July reached 21.62°C (70.92°F), breaking the previous record from 2022. France experienced its earliest heat wave alerts in May, with many regions recording unprecedented high temperatures for that month. The situation worsened in June, leading to at least 5,700 excess deaths attributed to the extreme heat, as reported by France’s public health agency. Notably, June 23 marked the hottest day in French history, with temperatures soaring to 44.3°C (111.7°F) in the southwest.
July saw two additional heat waves that contributed to one of the largest evacuation efforts in Europe since World War II, displacing 220,000 people due to catastrophic wildfires in southwestern France.
Drought and Health Risks in the U.K.
While the U.K. experienced slightly cooler conditions recently, it is bracing for its fifth heat wave of the summer during an exceptionally hot and dry season. With half of England and all of Wales officially in drought, provisional data reveal that July 2023 was the driest on record since 1836, with 19 counties in England experiencing no rainfall throughout the month.
Health officials are particularly concerned about the impact of the heat on vulnerable populations, stating that significant health risks, including increased mortality rates among the elderly, are likely as temperatures rise. In total, two major heat waves in May and June accounted for over 2,800 excess deaths linked to extreme temperatures.
