In an alarming revelation, a recent survey has unveiled that nearly a third of British manufacturers faced cyber-attacks over the past year, underscoring the escalating risks posed to businesses in the UK. With generative AI systems now capable of autonomously breaching security measures, the urgency for robust cyber-defences has never been greater.
A Stark Reality for Manufacturers
According to a comprehensive report by MakeUK, a prominent lobby group representing British manufacturers, 30% of those surveyed reported experiencing a cyber incident within the last twelve months. This troubling statistic highlights the pervasive threat that hackers pose, particularly as companies enhance their operational connectivity to boost productivity. The consequences of such breaches have been severe, resulting in substantial production downtime and increased operational costs.
The urgent need for improved cybersecurity strategies is further illustrated by the fallout from the cyber-attack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) last August, which compelled the automotive giant to halt production for several weeks. The independent Cyber Monitoring Centre estimated that this incident alone cost the UK economy an eye-watering £1.9 billion, primarily due to lost output at JLR and its suppliers. Notably, it has been reported that Russian hackers were implicated in this significant breach.
Continuous Threats and Insufficient Preparedness
Large companies have described their environment as one of near-constant digital siege, with hackers, often state-sponsored, becoming increasingly proficient at infiltrating corporate defences. Despite the mounting threats, only half of the manufacturers surveyed by MakeUK have a robust plan in place to counter potential cyber-attacks. This lack of preparedness is even more concerning given that the UK government has estimated that cybercrime costs the economy a staggering £14.7 billion annually.
The situation is further compounded by the advent of generative AI, which has introduced new dimensions to cyber threats. Some generative AI platforms have exhibited the capability to autonomously hack into corporate systems, amplifying the urgent need for manufacturers to upgrade their cybersecurity measures.
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
The ripple effect of cyber incidents is particularly pronounced within supply chains. Among the 123 manufacturers surveyed, approximately 30% reported that cyber-attacks on their supply chains led to delivery delays and output reductions. Alarmingly, nearly a quarter of these manufacturers also indicated that they faced shortages of essential components and materials due to their suppliers being compromised.
In addition to JLR, other significant breaches have been reported, including attacks on FTSE 100 manufacturers like IMI and Smiths Group, both of which experienced cyber incidents within days of one another in early 2025. The retail sector has not been spared either, with high-profile breaches affecting giants such as Marks & Spencer, the Co-op, and Harrods last year.
The Call to Action
Jonathon Ellison, director of national resilience at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), emphasised the critical nature of cybersecurity, stating, “In today’s landscape, no manufacturer can afford to treat cybersecurity as anything other than a business-critical priority.” The NCSC is actively engaged in assisting organisations of all sizes in strengthening their cyber defences to combat these omnipresent threats.
