A Scorching July
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), July’s average temperature hit a staggering 76.9 degrees Fahrenheit, eclipsing previous records by 0.1 to 0.2 degrees. This month marked a significant rise from the previous record-holding July months of 2012 and 1936, during the infamous Dust Bowl.
Interestingly, despite daytime temperatures being only the sixth warmest on record, the lack of nighttime cooling contributed significantly to the extreme average. NOAA reported that while daytime highs averaged 89.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the overnight lows soared to an average of 64.2 degrees—3.7 degrees above the norm. The alarming rise in temperatures this summer can largely be attributed to human-induced climate change. Experts highlight that greenhouse gases emitted by the fossil fuel industry continue to warm the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in severe weather patterns, increased droughts, and heightened instances of extreme heat.
Katharine Jacobs, a climate scientist at the University of Arizona, remarked, “Extremely high temperatures across the continental U.S. this summer, along with intense drought and fire conditions, are absolutely consistent with the climate change signal.”

This warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation typically leads to increased global temperatures, and its recent strengthening is expected to contribute to record-breaking heat levels in the coming months. Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, noted, “We expect to set record global temperatures as long as carbon emissions continue to warm the planet, and typically these records are set during major El Niño events.”

The ongoing climate crisis is underscored by a recent report from the American Meteorological Society, which revealed that greenhouse gas concentrations, global sea levels, and ocean heat content reached unprecedented levels in 2025.
