A violent altercation between two flatmates in Walthamstow culminated in tragedy when one man was fatally stabbed, a court has been informed. Eugeniu Neamtu, 59, is currently on trial at the Old Bailey for the murder of his fellow Romanian, Gheorghe Trica, 63, following a heated dispute over a sum of money.
Fatal Confrontation on 20 February
The incident took place on the evening of 20 February, as tensions escalated between Neamtu and Trica. Prosecutor Philip Evans KC detailed the lead-up to the stabbing, indicating that a quarrel erupted, with accusations exchanged in Romanian. Witnesses reported hearing Trica demand, “Give me back those £5,” moments before the violent altercation.
The confrontation quickly turned deadly. Trica collapsed on the communal balcony of their shared residence and succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite the immediate intervention of police and medical personnel. The court heard that officers found Trica in a pool of blood just outside the flat’s entrance.
Evidence and Allegations
In the aftermath of the stabbing, it was claimed that Neamtu was observed disposing of an item over the balcony. Police subsequently conducted a search of the garden below, where a steak knife was recovered, believed to be the weapon used in the attack.
Neamtu, who is known as “Jimmy,” provided a statement asserting that he had acted in self-defence. He claimed that Trica had threatened his life, physically assaulted him, and made gestures simulating throat slitting, prompting him to arm himself with the knife. The defendant stated he intended to intimidate Trica rather than inflict harm, but ultimately stabbed him in the chest during the confrontation.
Previous Convictions Resurface
During the prosecution’s opening remarks, Evans highlighted Neamtu’s troubling history, drawing parallels with a previous incident that took place in Romania in 2006. The court was informed of a conviction in May 2007, where Neamtu had stabbed a man named Adrian Vas during a drunken dispute over rent. In that case, much like the current one, Neamtu claimed he acted in self-defence; however, the Romanian court rejected his assertions.
Evans emphasised the similarities between the two cases: both involved alcohol-fuelled arguments over money, both resulted in a stabbing, and both saw the defendant later claiming self-defence. These parallels raise questions about Neamtu’s credibility and the likelihood of a similar pattern of behaviour.
Ongoing Proceedings
As the trial continues, Neamtu, who resides on Westbury Road in Walthamstow, has maintained his not guilty plea to the charge of murder. The court proceedings are expected to delve deeper into the events leading up to the fatal encounter, as well as the backgrounds of both men involved.
