A team of researchers from McMaster University has successfully pinpointed the origins of a persistent black grime that has settled over homes and gardens in Hamilton, near the city’s industrial sector. Their findings suggest that coal combustion is the primary culprit behind this unsettling soot, while also revealing that its complexity indicates multiple sources contribute to the issue.

The study, aptly named ‘What’s The Grime’, involved detailed imaging and analysis of grime samples collected from affected areas. Grace Yao, a PhD student at McMaster and co-lead on the research, expressed concern over the potential health hazards posed by the grime, particularly for small children and pets, who might inadvertently ingest it.
Residents have reported frustration regarding the lack of information on how to safely deal with the grime or effectively clean it from their properties. “There’s not much publicly available information on how to keep yourself safe from this stuff, or how to clean it properly,” Yao noted.
