As the UK braced for more sweltering days, Verdant’s director, James Meadway, highlighted the pressing need for government intervention. “The economic costs of climate change are already with us, and set to worsen in future years,” he stated. “Action by the government to protect workers and businesses from the severe effects of extreme heat is well overdue.”
Extreme heat affects productivity across various sectors, as workers struggle to maintain their output. Infrastructure also suffers, with equipment overheating and necessitating shutdowns. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat in England, following previous heatwaves in May, June, and July, making it likely that this summer will be one of the hottest on record.

In response to these alarming trends, Verdant is advocating for the introduction of a maximum working temperature, which would safeguard workers’ health and productivity. They also suggest that the government should provide financial compensation for employees who are compelled to reduce their hours due to high temperatures.
The report emphasises the necessity for investment in urban planning, urging the creation of cooler green spaces in UK towns and cities to mitigate the effects of heat. Verdant’s estimates focus solely on direct economic impacts, excluding indirect losses related to wildfire management and increased electricity consumption from air conditioning and fans.
Projections for the Future
If current trends continue, Verdant warns that the economic toll from heatwaves could soar. Based on cross-European estimates from the insurer Allianz, they note that for every degree above 30°C, hourly worker output declines by 3%. This alarming statistic aligns with research from the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics, which determined that June’s heatwave alone cost over £1 billion in lost productivity.
Surveys conducted during this period revealed that 3.6% of respondents were unable to work at all in the week of 22 June due to the oppressive heat, while a staggering 87% experienced health-related issues, including disrupted sleep and dizziness.
The Broader Context of Climate Change
The repercussions of extreme weather events extend beyond immediate economic costs. Economists have raised concerns regarding inflationary pressures stemming from disrupted food production due to droughts, floods, and wildfires.
