Via Rail has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance connectivity for long-distance train passengers at one of Canada’s busiest airports. Announced on Wednesday, the initiative aims to establish a state-of-the-art integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, which will link Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle connections to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.
A Unified Transit Experience
Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, emphasised the project’s primary objective: to consolidate various transportation options under one roof. This new hub is designed to simplify travel for residents and visitors alike, making it easier to navigate the city and beyond. “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide really a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, for people coming in from outside, inside the city,” he stated in an interview with Global News.
Currently, the transit experience in Dorval is described as “fragmented,” requiring commuters transferring from Via Rail to exo trains to traverse an underpass and cross several roads to reach their next station. However, local residents like Paul Parisien, who resides on the West Island, have expressed enthusiasm for the integrated hub. “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system,” he remarked.
Local Leaders Back the Initiative
Dorval’s Mayor, Marc Doret, has voiced his full support for the transit hub, recognising the challenges posed by the current fragmented system. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” Doret noted. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.” His backing reflects a broader consensus that improved transit options are crucial for both residents and visitors.
As the project develops, Via Rail is keen to highlight the potential environmental benefits of the new hub. Helou reiterated the importance of integrated mobility, stating, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, simple to use and people will use it.” The goal is not only to enhance convenience but also to encourage more individuals to opt for public transit over private vehicles.
Future Developments and Budget Considerations
The proposed plan involves closing the existing Via Rail station on the south side of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station on the north side, adjacent to the existing exo stop. Helou assured that there will be an overpass constructed over the tracks, allowing both Via Rail and exo trains to operate without service interruptions. “So no disruptions of service and a much better experience, an accessible experience for passengers,” he added.
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a final budget for the project has yet to be established. The timeline for construction remains uncertain; however, Helou indicated that the full build-out could take anywhere from two to five years.
Why it Matters
This new transit hub represents a significant step towards modernising public transportation in Quebec, offering a streamlined experience for passengers and aiming to reduce reliance on cars. The project not only promises to enhance the efficiency of travel between Dorval and Montreal’s airport but also highlights a commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable transportation network. As urban centres continue to grow, initiatives like this are pivotal in shaping the future of transit, ensuring that cities remain accessible and interconnected for all.
