Melanoma skin cancer ranks as the fifth most prevalent cancer in the UK, with nearly 90% of cases attributed to excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure. The charity points out that UV radiation can lead to sunburn and skin cancer, with the potential for harmful effects peaking from mid-March to mid-October, regardless of ambient temperature. This reiterates the need for public awareness and proactive measures.
Consumers are encouraged to look for the open-lid symbol on sunscreen packaging, which indicates how many months the product will remain effective once opened. Cancer Research UK advises people to avoid direct sun exposure, particularly between 11 am and 3 pm, and to regularly reapply sunscreen—especially after swimming, sweating, or towelling off.
