In a significant move to enhance long-distance train travel, Via Rail has announced plans to develop a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec. This initiative aims to streamline connections between Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle services to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. The proposed hub is set to transform the current fragmented transit system, offering a more cohesive and user-friendly experience for passengers.
A Vision for Seamless Travel
On Wednesday, Via Rail revealed its intentions to establish a centralised transit facility in Dorval. Karl Helou, a spokesperson for the Crown corporation, emphasised that the primary objective is to unite various transportation options under one roof. “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options together to provide a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval and those coming in from outside the city,” he stated. This comprehensive approach seeks to improve the overall travel experience for commuters and visitors alike.
Currently, passengers transferring from Via Rail to exo trains face a cumbersome journey involving an underpass and several road crossings. Regular users have expressed enthusiasm for the integrated hub, which promises to simplify these transitions. Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, remarked, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.”
Local Support and Community Impact
Dorval Mayor Marc Doret has publicly endorsed the project, highlighting the challenges of navigating the area as it stands. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” he explained. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.” The mayor’s support reflects a broader community desire for improved accessibility and convenience in public transportation.
By consolidating transit options, Via Rail aims to encourage a shift away from car dependency, promoting public transport as a viable alternative. Helou noted, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, and people will use it.” The vision is clear: create a seamless travel experience that meets diverse transportation needs.
Construction Plans and Funding
The project will involve closing the existing Via Rail station located south of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station at the north end, adjacent to the current exo stop. Helou assured that an overpass will be built over the tracks to ensure uninterrupted service for both Via Rail and exo trains. “So no disruptions of service and a much better experience, an accessible experience for passengers,” he added.
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Canadian government, a definitive budget for the project has yet to be established. The timeline for construction remains uncertain, but Helou indicated that the entire process could span from two to five years.
