A dramatic police pursuit unfolded through Greater Manchester on Wednesday evening, when a suspected thief stole an Amazon delivery van, leading to a high-speed chase that lasted over 40 minutes. The incident, which reached speeds of 100mph, raised concerns for public safety after the driver collided with a cyclist and damaged various street fixtures before finally crashing in Chorley, Lancashire.
A Chaotic Pursuit
The sequence of events began at approximately 6:23 PM when police received a 999 call reporting the theft of an Amazon van, containing parcels valued at £1,000. Within a quarter of an hour, officers located the vehicle and attempted to intercept it. However, the driver, a 25-year-old man, sped away, igniting a chase that would see him recklessly navigate through residential areas.
The police reported that during the pursuit, the driver frequently exceeded speed limits, ultimately reaching around 100mph. His actions not only endangered his own life but also put innocent bystanders at risk. Tragically, a cyclist was injured during the chaos, although fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
A Dangerous Conclusion
The chase came to an abrupt end when the stolen van collided with pedestrian barriers and struck another vehicle that was halted at traffic lights. Officers swiftly apprehended the suspect at the crash site, where he was charged with multiple offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Additionally, he was found in possession of Class A and C drugs.
Following his arrest, the suspect was granted bail pending further investigation.
