A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Indonesia early on Saturday, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 38 individuals, according to the nation’s disaster relief agency. As search and rescue operations are currently underway, the toll is expected to rise, with dozens more reportedly injured in the wake of this calamity. The quake, which occurred just before 5:00 AM local time, has caused significant structural damage across the affected region, exacerbated by a series of aftershocks.

Details of the Earthquake

The seismic event was centred on the island of Flores, approximately 1,000 kilometres from Bali. With a depth of 15 kilometres, the quake’s shallow nature has intensified its destructive potential. Following the initial shock, the area experienced multiple aftershocks, including a notable tremor measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. Later that same day, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck North Sumatra at a much greater depth of 163 kilometres, further unsettling residents.

Eyewitness accounts depict scenes of chaos and destruction. Video footage from Maumere port revealed substantial concrete debris falling from terminal buildings, endangering passengers waiting to board inter-island ferries. Tragically, many victims were reported to have perished in their sleep due to collapsing structures. Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, confirmed these fatalities during a press conference.

Residents’ Experiences and Evacuations

In the coastal village of Talibura, located in Sikka within East Nusa Tenggara, local resident Arnold Welianto described the harrowing experience of being jolted awake by the quake. “I was startled awake and immediately went to my child’s room,” he recounted. As fears of a tsunami surged, many residents fled to higher ground. Welianto noted that some individuals remained outside, as the threat of aftershocks kept them from returning indoors.

A tsunami warning was briefly issued but was lifted approximately three hours later when no significant rise in sea levels was detected. Nevertheless, the initial alert prompted a swift evacuation of approximately 2,000 residents, who moved inland on motorbikes as a precautionary measure.

Structural Damage and Ongoing Concerns

The preliminary assessment of the earthquake’s damage is still unfolding, with reports indicating that at least 54 houses have suffered severe damage, alongside five healthcare facilities, three places of worship, six government buildings, an educational institution, and a warehouse. The BNPB has identified Manggarai province as one of the hardest-hit areas. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while keeping a safe distance from coastal areas and any structures that may have been compromised.

Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university lecturer from Ruteng, expressed her alarm, stating, “I have never felt an earthquake this big. It felt like we were on a trampoline – it was really scary.” Her experience reflects the anxiety shared by many in the region, who continue to grapple with the aftershocks and the psychological toll of such a disaster.

Why it Matters

The impact of this earthquake is significant not only in terms of the immediate loss of life and destruction but also in highlighting Indonesia’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the nation frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, underscoring the necessity for robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. As rescue efforts continue and the community seeks to rebuild, the resilience of the Indonesian people will be tested in the face of this latest natural disaster.
