A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian island of Flores early Saturday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 47 lives, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). As rescue operations commence, the death toll is expected to rise, with numerous injuries reported amid widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure.

The Earthquake and Immediate Aftermath

The earthquake occurred shortly before 5:00 AM local time (22:00 GMT on Friday), at a depth of 15 kilometres, which has amplified its destructive potential. Reports from eyewitnesses describe the terrifying moments when the ground shook violently, throwing many residents from their beds. Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, revealed that many victims were killed in their sleep by collapsing structures.

Talibura resident Arnold Welianto recounted the chaos that ensued: “I was startled awake and immediately went to my child’s room.” Following the quake, many locals fled to higher ground, fearing a tsunami after the sea receded dramatically. A tsunami warning was subsequently issued but was lifted three hours later when no significant fluctuations in sea levels were observed.

Widespread Damage and Casualties

The BNPB reported that the earthquake has resulted in severe damage to over 150 houses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and various public buildings. Manggarai province appears to be among the hardest-hit areas, with recorded fatalities amounting to 24 in Manggarai, 17 in East Manggarai, three in Sikka, and at least one in the neighbouring provinces of Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai.

Many residents, fearing aftershocks, chose to remain outdoors. Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university lecturer from Ruteng, described her experience, stating, “I have never felt an earthquake this big. It felt like we were on a trampoline – it was really scary.” The immediate concern for safety has led some to cook meals outside, away from potential hazards.

Response and Relief Efforts

As the situation unfolds, the BNPB is coordinating relief efforts, dispatching aid to the affected regions. The agency has urged residents to remain calm and avoid coastal areas and buildings that exhibit signs of damage. Approximately 2,000 individuals have been reported to have evacuated or relocated independently.

Despite the remoteness and mountainous terrain of the affected areas, officials are striving to assess the full extent of the destruction. The combination of geographical challenges and the scale of the disaster will complicate recovery efforts in the days to come.

Why it Matters

This earthquake serves as a stark reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerability, lying along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire where tectonic plates converge, resulting in frequent seismic activity. The human toll and the damage inflicted will have lasting impacts on the affected communities, underlining the need for robust disaster preparedness and response strategies. As the nation grapples with the aftermath, the resilience of its people will be tested in the face of this calamity, highlighting the importance of international support and solidarity in recovery efforts.
