A devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has struck the island of Flores in Indonesia, claiming at least 47 lives and injuring many more. The tremor, which occurred early on Saturday morning, has prompted extensive search and rescue operations as the nation grapples with the aftermath of this disaster.
A Night of Terror
The earthquake hit shortly before 05:00 local time (22:00 GMT on Friday), with a shallow depth of 15 kilometres, heightening its destructive potential. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that hundreds of structures have sustained damage, exacerbated by numerous aftershocks that rattled the region, including a significant tremor measuring 6.1.
The governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, revealed that many victims were killed in their sleep as buildings collapsed around them. In a harrowing account, Arnold Welianto, a resident of Talibura, described the terrifying moment he was awoken by “very strong shaking.” Residents quickly fled to higher ground, fearing a tsunami after the sea receded dangerously low, although the tsunami warning was eventually rescinded after no significant rise in sea levels was detected.
Casualties and Damage
The impact of the quake has been felt sharply across several provinces. The BNPB reported that Manggarai province bore the brunt of the disaster, with 24 fatalities, while East Manggarai recorded 17 deaths, and Sikka province reported three casualties. Additional fatalities were confirmed in Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai provinces. The agency also indicated that at least two individuals suffered serious injuries, while 11 others sustained minor injuries.
Many residents, shaken by the tremors, have opted to sleep outdoors, fearing further aftershocks. One local university lecturer, Yulian Juita Ekalia, described dragging her stove outside to cook as she anxiously awaited the ground to settle. “I have never felt an earthquake this big,” she remarked, expressing the fear that enveloped the community.
Recovery Efforts Underway
Preliminary assessments indicate that over 150 homes have been severely damaged, along with various educational and healthcare facilities, places of worship, and public buildings. The region’s remote and mountainous terrain presents challenges for aid delivery, but the BNPB has assured that assistance is on its way. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and avoid damaged structures, while thousands have already evacuated to safer locations.
The Indonesian government, well aware of the seismic risks due to its geographical positioning along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is mobilising resources to aid affected communities. As recovery efforts unfold, the focus will be on providing immediate support to those in need and assessing the longer-term implications of this natural disaster.
Why it Matters
This earthquake is a stark reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerability to natural disasters, highlighting the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and response strategies. The loss of life and substantial damage to infrastructure not only affects local communities but also poses a significant challenge for the nation as it seeks to recover and rebuild. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, offering support and solidarity to a nation that has faced such adversity with resilience in the past.
