A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has tragically claimed the lives of at least 47 individuals in Indonesia, with the toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue. The quake, which struck early Saturday morning local time, has left hundreds injured and caused significant damage across the affected regions, particularly on the island of Flores.
Earthquake Details and Immediate Impact
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the earthquake occurred just before 05:00 local time (22:00 GMT on Friday), with a depth of 15 kilometres. Such shallow quakes are notorious for their potential to cause extensive damage. Following the initial tremor, a series of aftershocks ensued, including one measuring 6.4 in North Sumatra, although the US Geological Survey reported it as a magnitude 6.9.
Footage from Maumere, a port city near the epicentre, depicted alarming scenes as large sections of concrete fell from terminal buildings, narrowly missing passengers waiting to board ferries. Some individuals were even thrown into the sea when the gangway collapsed under the chaos.

According to East Nusa Tenggara’s governor, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, many victims were asleep when debris fell on their homes. Reports indicate that the hardest-hit areas include Manggarai province, where 24 fatalities have been confirmed. Other provinces, such as East Manggarai, Sikka, Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai, have also reported casualties.
Residents reacted quickly to the disaster, with many fleeing to higher ground as authorities issued a tsunami warning, which was later rescinded after three hours when no significant sea level changes were observed. BNPB confirmed that around 2,000 individuals evacuated their homes, with many choosing to remain outdoors due to ongoing aftershocks.

In Talibura, a coastal village, local resident Arnold Welianto described the terrifying moment the earthquake struck, saying he was jolted awake by the violent shaking. Many residents opted to shelter in the hills, while others congregated along roadways, fearful of returning to their homes.
Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university lecturer from Ruteng, shared her experience, stating she cooked outside, driven by anxiety over potential aftershocks. “I have never felt an earthquake this big,” she remarked, comparing the sensation to being on a trampoline.
As the extent of the devastation becomes clearer, initial assessments reveal that over 150 houses have suffered severe damage, along with numerous educational and healthcare facilities. The BNPB has mobilised aid to the affected areas and is urging the public to remain calm and avoid damaged structures.
