In a major letdown for Tesla’s robotaxi ambitions, Nevada officials have granted the company permission for only 10 driverless vehicles in Las Vegas, far short of the 5,000 it initially sought. A Fraction of the Fleet Approved
On July 27, the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) greenlit Tesla Robotaxi, LLC’s application, but the outcome was decidedly underwhelming. The approved vehicles are confined to a specific corridor on the Las Vegas Strip and are limited to a maximum speed of 45 mph. Notably, the vehicles will not be allowed to pick up passengers at Harry Reid International Airport, a significant location originally included in Tesla’s proposal.
The approval comes with a host of conditions: each vehicle must be marked as a “robotaxi,” and passengers must be informed that they are riding in a driverless car. Furthermore, the deployment of these vehicles will require “appropriate human supervision,” though it’s currently unclear whether this entails having a safety driver in the vehicle or monitoring from a remote location.

Zoox initiated its operations in May 2025 with free rides under interim approval, gradually transitioning to a paid model. Their services include fees contingent on destination, particularly at high-traffic locations like the airport and popular venues like the Sphere and T-Mobile Arena.
A Gradual Rollout Strategy
Tesla’s restricted deployment in Las Vegas aligns with the company’s broader strategy of gradual expansion. Currently, the firm has been testing autonomous rides in cities such as Austin, Dallas, and Houston, slowly ramping up operations rather than opting for an immediate large-scale launch. Additionally, Tesla is actively developing its next-generation Full Self-Driving (FSD) v15 software, which is expected to enhance its robotaxi capabilities.
