A new wave of Russian aerial assaults across Ukraine has resulted in at least five fatalities and left over ten individuals injured, as reported by state officials. The strikes have ignited fires in various locations, including a book market in Kyiv, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to denounce Russia’s targeting of civilian infrastructure. In a stark response, Moscow’s mayor disclosed that approximately 600 Ukrainian drones were launched towards the Russian capital overnight, resulting in significant damage to a warehouse belonging to the online retailer Wildberries.
Renewed Assaults Across the Capital
The recent escalation in hostilities has seen air-raid sirens sound multiple times in Kyiv since Saturday night, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirming at least six injuries, including that of a child. In Kryvyi Rih, a 44-year-old man, previously reported missing, has been discovered dead in the debris of a collapsed structure, while another individual perished amidst the chaos at a local steel plant, which also left 14 workers injured.
Elsewhere, two senior citizens lost their lives in Zaporizhzhia due to a destroyed residence, and a further casualty was reported in Sumy. Zelensky stated that Kremenchuk and Kryvyi Rih were struck by ballistic missiles, asserting, “Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure.”
Targeting of Civilian Locations
In a grim portrayal of the aftermath, a book market in Kyiv’s Pochayna district was severely damaged, with charred volumes strewn across the ground. Valentina, 69, whose husband owned a stall at the market, expressed her shock, recalling, “You never think that it will happen to you.”
Similarly, Luba, a vinyl store owner, lamented the loss of stock worth approximately 500,000 hryvnias (£8,262), describing her business as her “baby” and emphasising the irreplaceability of many of the destroyed items. “I want Russia to disappear from this Earth,” she declared.
The Russian defence ministry claimed its strikes were aimed at military logistics, including a facility in Kremenchuk that supplied fuel to the Ukrainian armed forces. Additionally, Moscow asserted it targeted a dry cargo vessel near Odesa, allegedly transporting military equipment.
The Broader Context of Conflict
As the conflict drags on, the intensity of attacks has escalated. Zelensky reported that 13 regions were impacted this week alone, with Russia deploying more than 1,550 attack drones, alongside nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs and 62 missiles. Russian air defences reportedly intercepted and destroyed 822 of these drones.
In a retaliatory move, the governor of Rostov in southwestern Russia confirmed that five individuals died due to overnight strikes. In the Belgorod region, adjacent to Ukraine, a woman lost her life when a bus was struck. A drone incursion into Moscow resulted in the death of an 83-year-old man and injuries to three others, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who noted that roughly one-third of the Ukrainian drones aimed at the capital were neutralised.
International Repercussions
Further complicating the situation, the Romanian defence ministry reported the interception of a drone that had crossed into its airspace from Moldova. An F-18 fighter jet, part of NATO’s defence framework, successfully shot down the drone near Galati, with debris falling in an uninhabited area.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has maintained control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. With minimal territorial advancements for either side amidst a prolonged ground conflict, aerial engagements have become the primary mode of warfare, focusing on diminishing the adversary’s capabilities.
