In a significant effort to restore the forests of Gros Morne National Park, teams have embarked on an ambitious tree-planting project, aiming to combat the damage inflicted by an overabundant moose population. Since the beginning of 2023, approximately 730,000 trees have been planted in areas previously decimated by these herbivores, with plans to expand this initiative to a total of 1.25 million trees over the next three years. The initiative is not only about reforestation; it is also a strategic response to climate change, ensuring that the new forests will be resilient against future environmental challenges.
Addressing Ecological Imbalance
Darroch Whitaker, an ecosystems scientist with Parks Canada, highlighted the severe impact of moose on the park’s ecosystem. Once thriving areas of forest have been transformed into grasslands due to the insatiable appetites of these animals. The park, which spans 1,805 square kilometres and boasts breathtaking fjords, boreal forests, and cascading waterfalls, has become a battleground between wildlife and nature conservation efforts.
Historically, moose thrived in Gros Morne due to a hunting ban that protected them from human intervention. This led to an unprecedented population explosion; in the 1990s, the park was home to around 6,500 moose, with some regions housing six or more animals per square kilometre. “We were recording some of the highest densities of moose that had ever been recorded in the world,” Whitaker stated, recalling how these animals became so accustomed to human presence that they often wandered into towns and along hiking trails.
A New Approach to Reforestation
The replanting initiative began in earnest in 2023, with teams dropping two-year-old saplings into what are now referred to as “moose meadows,” areas that were once lush with trees but have been left barren. Many of these saplings are nurtured at the Rocky Harbour tree nursery, where staff work diligently to monitor for pests that could threaten the young plants.
Whitaker’s team is not merely focusing on traditional species like black and white spruce and balsam fir; they are also introducing a variety of “boutique trees,” such as yellow birch and wild cherry, which are typically found in the warmer southern regions of the park. By using seeds from these areas, the project aims to cultivate trees better suited to withstand the anticipated rise in temperatures over the coming decades.
“A tree can’t migrate on its own,” Whitaker explained. “It’s stuck where it starts, where a seed falls. They can’t migrate at the same rate as the climate, and so they may need a helping hand.” This forward-thinking approach is crucial to the long-term survival of the park’s ecosystem.
A Balanced Future for Gros Morne
The decision to allow hunting in Gros Morne starting in 2011 has successfully reduced the moose population to a manageable level of about 2,000. This reduction is creating a more balanced ecosystem that allows for natural regeneration of the forest. However, the ongoing tree-planting efforts are vital for accelerating recovery and ensuring the landscape can thrive in the face of climate change.
At the heart of the initiative is a commitment to ecological resilience. Whitaker voiced optimism for the future: “The trees we plant today have to survive probably for another century, and we know the climate is changing.”
