In a stunning display of equine excellence, Luster triumphed at the 167th running of the King’s Plate in Toronto, securing a decisive 7 ¼-length win on Saturday. The much-anticipated race, boasting a purse of $1 million, showcased Luster’s remarkable talent as she cruised to victory after starting in fourth place at the final turn. This victory follows her impressive performance in the Woodbine Oaks, where she won by 5 ½ lengths, solidifying her status as a formidable contender on the Canadian racing scene.

Velazquez’s Masterclass

Jockey John Velazquez, renowned as thoroughbred racing’s leading money-earning rider, guided Luster to her latest victory, marking his second King’s Plate success. His first win in this prestigious race was in 2018 aboard the filly Wonder Gadot. Velazquez, who also rode Luster in her Oaks triumph, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’ve been very lucky and very blessed with the fillies. Running against the colts and coming here to Canada and winning the (Plate) for a second time is fantastic.”

Trainer Josie Carroll celebrated her fourth King’s Plate victory, having previously won in 2006 with Edenwold and in 2011 with Inglorious. Her last win prior to this was in 2020 with Mighty Heart. Carroll’s consistent success in this marquee event further establishes her as a leading figure in Canadian horse racing.

Race Recap and Highlights

Luster’s connections faced a challenge when drawing the No. 1 post position, but Velazquez’s skillful handling allowed the filly to navigate potential obstacles smoothly. After a quick start, Luster settled comfortably in fourth place, closely following competitors Fire and Wine, Very Special, and Magical Factor. As the race approached the final turn, Velazquez strategically moved Luster into second place before making his decisive push.

With a quarter-mile to go, Luster surged ahead, ultimately finishing the race in a time of 2:02.01. This performance was tantalisingly close to the track record set by last year’s champion filly, Moira, who clocked in at 2:01.48. Velazquez remarked on his tactical approach, saying, “I didn’t want to be behind the horse that was on the lead, obviously. Once I put myself in that position… she was perfect.”

The final standings saw Military Time, ridden by Fraser Aebly, take second place, followed by Fire and Wine and jockey Jalon Samuel. The complete order of finish included Dixie Law, Don Ique, Bond Market, Imyourmedicineman, Brachetto, Highwaytothemoon, Baaeed Alynna, Magical Factor, and Very Special.

Future Prospects for Luster

With this latest victory, Luster has now won five of her six career starts, with her only blemish being a third-place finish. The substantial winner’s share of $600,000 has propelled her total earnings beyond $1.093 million, raising expectations for her upcoming races. The next challenge on the horizon is the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on September 7 at Fort Erie Race Track. Should Luster secure a win there, she would join the ranks of Wando, the last horse to complete the Canadian Triple Crown in 2003.

While the future remains uncertain, Carroll chose to focus on the present, stating, “I think we’re just going to enjoy today.” Her confident handling of Luster continues to impress owners and fans alike, with part-owner Andrew Rosen recalling Carroll’s bold prediction prior to the race: “Last year, Josie told me we were going to be standing here. I think she knew right from the get-go.”

A Day of Racing Highlights

Amidst the excitement of the King’s Plate, other notable races also took place at Woodbine. Filly De la Renta, under Aebly’s guidance and trained by Kevin Attard, clinched victory in the $150,000 bet365 Soaring Free Stakes with a time of 1:17.19. In a nail-biting finish, Souped Up, a 10-1 pick, edged out Western Whirl in the $175,000 Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes, while Proctor Street earned a thrilling victory in the Grade 2 $200,000 Canadian Stakes.

Velazquez showcased his riding prowess throughout the day, winning multiple races, while Attard’s horses secured five victories in total, highlighting the day’s competitive nature.

Why it Matters

Luster’s triumph at the King’s Plate not only elevates her status within Canadian horse racing but also reignites interest in the potential for a Triple Crown winner this year. As the racing community looks ahead to the Prince of Wales Stakes, Luster’s impressive form and the combined expertise of Carroll and Velazquez promise to keep fans eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. The success of this event underscores the enduring appeal of horse racing in Canada and the remarkable talent within its ranks, reinforcing the sport’s position on the international stage.
