Ebola Crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Becomes the Deadliest on Record

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has tragically surpassed all previous records, claiming at least 2,325 lives and positioning itself as the most lethal epidemic in the nation’s history. With confirmed cases nearing 5,000, the current crisis is on track to eclipse the catastrophic 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa, which resulted in over 28,000 infections and more than 11,000 fatalities.

Alarming Statistics and Escalating Threat

According to the DRC’s public health institute, the number of confirmed Ebola cases has surged to 4,945, with 101 new infections reported within just 24 hours. This alarming increase has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise its concerns, indicating that the DRC outbreak is rapidly advancing towards becoming the largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded.

The UN has issued a stark warning, declaring that “Ebola is winning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” with the virus claiming a life approximately every 30 minutes. Six of the DRC’s 26 provinces are currently affected, predominantly those adjacent to the northeastern border. The majority of cases—over 3,400—have been reported in Ituri province, where the outbreak was initially detected.

Historical Context and Rapid Spread

This outbreak marks the 17th occurrence of Ebola in the DRC and has been identified as the fastest-growing in the virus’s recorded history. By comparison, the previous West African outbreak took nearly five months to reach 1,000 deaths, while the current crisis has seen more than 2,000 fatalities in under three months.

What exacerbates the situation further is the absence of approved vaccines or treatments for the specific Bundibugyo strain responsible for the current surge. Clinical trials for two potential treatments commenced last month in Ituri, while the WHO has begun testing two vaccines specifically developed for this strain.

Challenges in Containment and Treatment

Public health specialist Thomas Parisch, recently dispatched to the DRC by Médecins Sans Frontières, expressed concern over the outbreak’s trajectory. He noted that typically, as an epidemic progresses, the fatality rate should decline due to improved contact tracing and earlier identification of patients. However, the current crisis has seen many cases diagnosed only after patients have succumbed to the disease in their communities, significantly diminishing the chances for successful treatment.

In neighbouring Uganda, at least 20 cases have been confirmed, all in the capital, Kampala. Fortunately, no community transmission has been reported since the last case on 21 June. The WHO declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern in May, although genetic sequencing indicated that the virus had likely been circulating since February.

Understanding Ebola Transmission and Symptoms

Ebola is a zoonotic disease, initially transmitted to humans from wild animals. It spreads among humans through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, which includes blood, secretions, and organs, as well as contaminated surfaces and materials such as bedding or clothing. Symptoms begin with fever, fatigue, and muscle pain, escalating to more severe manifestations including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rash, and signs of compromised kidney and liver function.
