The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) has rejected a significant proposal to establish a natural gas power plant intended to support a large data centre complex in Olds, Alberta. Submitted by Synapse Real Estate Corp., the ambitious project aimed to create a ten-building campus capable of generating 1.4 gigawatts of power—sufficient for the entire city of Edmonton. However, the commission deemed the location unsuitable due to concerns from the local community.
Community Concerns Lead to Rejection
The AUC’s decision, announced on Monday, cited the project’s proximity to local residences as a primary factor in its rejection. The commission indicated that Synapse had not provided adequate justification for the chosen site. “The project is too close to the surrounding community, and Synapse failed to demonstrate any compelling justification for selecting that location,” stated the commission. “The site is simply not suitable for the proposed development.”
With a population of approximately 10,000, Olds has seen considerable opposition to the project from its residents, who expressed worries about potential noise, air pollution, the impact on property values, and the strain on local health and emergency services.
