The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reached a grim milestone, becoming the deadliest recorded in the nation’s history. Official figures indicate that at least 2,325 individuals have succumbed to the virus, surpassing the death toll from the previous outbreak that occurred between 2018 and 2020. The situation is escalating rapidly, with the World Health Organization (WHO) warning that this outbreak could outpace the catastrophic epidemic that affected West Africa from 2014 to 2016.
Current Situation and Statistics
As of now, the DRC has reported a total of 4,945 confirmed cases, including 101 new cases detected in just the past 24 hours. The WHO has highlighted that the current outbreak is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 epidemic, which resulted in 28,616 cases and 11,325 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Alarmingly, the United Nations has stated that a person is dying from Ebola in the DRC every 30 minutes.
The outbreak has predominantly affected six of the DRC’s 26 provinces, particularly in the north-eastern region. The Ituri province, where the outbreak first emerged, accounts for over 3,400 of the recorded cases. This represents the 17th Ebola outbreak in the country’s history and is characterised by its rapid spread; it took nearly five months for the West African outbreak to reach 1,000 deaths, while the current outbreak has surpassed that figure in less than three months.
Challenges in Containing the Outbreak
Despite the alarming rise in cases, there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain of the virus driving this outbreak. Nevertheless, some 1,000 individuals have recovered, with 730 still receiving treatment or isolation care. Clinical trials for two potential treatments commenced last month in Ituri, and two vaccines specifically designed for the Bundibugyo strain are now undergoing trials.
Public health experts have expressed concerns that the situation may worsen rather than improve. Thomas Parisch, a specialist from Médecins Sans Frontières, noted, “As an outbreak progresses, we would typically expect the case fatality ratio to decrease as contact tracing improves. Instead, we are continuing to see many cases identified too late for effective treatment.”
Regional Impact and Community Response
The outbreak is not confined to the DRC; neighbouring Uganda has confirmed at least 20 cases, all within the capital, Kampala. The last reported case in Uganda occurred on June 21, and the government declared the country Ebola-free on July 28, following the discharge of the last patient.
The WHO has classified the DRC and Uganda’s outbreaks as public health emergencies of international concern, attributing their rapid escalation to a lack of early detection and treatment, compounded by community mistrust and misinformation surrounding safe burial practices. Many individuals opt for home treatment due to fears of hospitals, leading to a concerning trend where over 70% of Ebola-related deaths occur outside of healthcare facilities.
Jean-Paul Malo Lotsima, a civil society leader in the affected Djugu area, emphasised the community’s preference for home care, often resulting in tragic delays in seeking medical assistance. Flavier Ngurima, a resident of Nizi, shared a personal account of loss, stating, “We had called on a nurse from the family to treat him at home because the patient and the family members were afraid to go to the treatment centre.”
