A recent salmonella outbreak in the UK has resulted in one fatality and more than 200 reported illnesses, prompting urgent investigations by health officials. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has established a connection between the outbreak and imported eggs, ruling out domestic sources of contamination. As of now, the agency is collaborating with European counterparts to trace the origins of the implicated strain.
Overview of the Outbreak
The UKHSA has confirmed that the outbreak has affected 207 individuals, with ages spanning from less than one year to 90 years. The first reported case emerged on 11 August 2025, but the majority of cases have been identified since mid-July 2026. Most of the infections have occurred in England (199 cases), with a smaller number reported in Scotland (six) and single instances in Wales and Northern Ireland. London has been particularly affected, with 47 cases recorded, while the Yorkshire and the Humber region has seen 38 infections.
The agency’s findings indicate that all cases are linked to a single strain of salmonella, identified through whole-genome sequencing. Tragically, the investigation has also revealed that at least 34 individuals required hospitalisation due to severe symptoms, and two have developed bloodstream infections.
Investigation and Source Attribution
The UKHSA is actively working to unravel the source of the outbreak. Their preliminary investigations indicate that the contamination is likely associated with imported eggs, with no evidence linking the outbreak to UK-produced eggs or poultry. The agency has initiated extensive epidemiological investigations and food chain analyses to locate the source of the salmonella strain.
Interviews conducted with 114 affected individuals have highlighted five food businesses that reported clusters of cases. These establishments are believed to have a shared supply chain, drawing from multiple sources, including egg importers. Local investigations have also raised concerns regarding potential cross-contamination events in two of these settings.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the UKHSA has not released specific details regarding the deceased individual or the circumstances surrounding their death, citing the need for confidentiality during the inquiry.

Hannah Charles, the lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at the UKHSA, emphasised the importance of public awareness during this outbreak. She stated, “Salmonellosis is often caused by eating or handling contaminated food and can be spread rarely from person to person.” Though the illness typically results in mild symptoms, vulnerable populations, such as those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe effects.
The symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and fever. Health officials encourage anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek guidance from their GP or out-of-hours medical services. Furthermore, the UKHSA has issued practical advice to the public to help prevent the spread of salmonella. This includes thorough hand-washing after using the toilet and before food preparation, ensuring that food is cooked adequately, and refraining from preparing food for others if experiencing symptoms.
