Authorities in southeastern Ontario are grappling with a grim series of discoveries following the identification of human remains belonging to a man who had been missing for nearly four years. Lawrence Bertrim, aged 42, was last seen in Smiths Falls in September 2022. His remains were found on a residential property on Kelly Jordan Road in Montague, approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, where two other sets of remains had previously been unearthed. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are continuing their investigation into this troubling case, which has raised numerous questions about safety and community impacts.

A Disturbing Pattern

The OPP confirmed on Tuesday that the remains found at the Montague property belong to Bertrim, marking a third set of human remains discovered there. Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton noted that the investigation remains “far from complete,” and the cause of Bertrim’s death has yet to be determined. This revelation adds a somber layer to an already complex case that began last autumn when the first set of remains, identified as Robbie Thomson, was found during a police search on October 30. Thomson had been reported missing two years earlier, and three individuals—Christopher Fenton, Erin Mackie, and Joshua Belfiori—face charges of first-degree murder in connection with his death.

In a subsequent development last month, police uncovered another set of remains belonging to Robert Lambert, a 75-year-old man who had gone missing in November 2018. Lambert’s case has been particularly poignant, as he had moved to Ontario from the United States in 2004 and had faced significant life changes following the death of his fiancée in 2016.

Community Responses and Concerns

The recent discoveries have understandably shaken the small community of Montague. Karen Jennings, the reeve for Montague Township, described the situation as “heartbreaking news” for residents. In a statement, she expressed empathy for the families involved while reassuring the community that there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety. “We continue to be advised by the OPP that there is no threat to the public at this time,” Jennings remarked, emphasising the importance of respecting the privacy of the affected families as investigations proceed.

The police are actively seeking information related to both Bertrim and Lambert, offering rewards of $50,000 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction in each case. As the OPP continues to gather evidence, they are hopeful that someone in the community may hold vital information that could shed light on these tragedies.

Investigative Challenges

The investigation into the three cases is complicated by the passage of time and the nature of the findings. Both Bertrim and Lambert had not been seen for extended periods before their disappearances were reported. The OPP has faced challenges in tracing their movements, particularly in Lambert’s case, where initial reports suggested he might have returned to the United States—claims that have since been proven unsubstantiated.

Christopher Fenton, who has been linked to both the property and Lambert through ownership records, has been named as Mr. Lambert’s power of attorney prior to his disappearance. The implications of this relationship are under scrutiny as the investigation unfolds, with police piecing together timelines and connections between the individuals involved.

Why it Matters

The discovery of human remains in Montague is not just a local issue; it resonates with broader themes of community safety and the importance of vigilant reporting of missing persons. As families seek closure, the community is reminded of the fragility of life and the critical need for support systems to help those who may be vulnerable. The ongoing investigation underscores the necessity for transparency and communication between law enforcement and the public, ensuring that no detail is overlooked in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.
