Recent research has unveiled encouraging findings regarding the lung health of children living in London, particularly in the wake of the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) introduced in 2019. The study highlights significant improvements in lung function among youngsters whose growth had previously been hindered by high levels of air pollution. Professor Chris Griffiths, a senior author of the study at Queen Mary University of London, expressed his astonishment at the results, stating, “The speed of catch-up in lung capacity in the London group was surprising and impressive.” This rapid improvement indicates that aggressive clean air policies can have immediate and positive impacts on children’s respiratory health.

The results revealed that the proportion of children in London with clinically impaired lung capacity decreased from 14% to 9%, while Luton saw a decrease from 9% to 7%. This stark contrast highlights the urgent need for continued efforts to improve air quality for the sake of public health.

While the findings are promising, experts urge caution and a comprehensive understanding of the broader context. Independent researchers have pointed out that factors such as increased walking or cycling among children following Ulez, as well as the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, should be considered in evaluating the results. Kevin McConway, an emeritus professor at the Open University, emphasised the necessity of examining other cities to determine whether these improvements are unique to London or indicative of a wider trend.

Dr Helen Wood, the lead author of the study, acknowledged the encouraging nature of the findings but reiterated that air pollution levels in both London and Luton remain above World Health Organization guidelines. “There is still work to be done,” she cautioned. The research team, which included experts from several prominent universities, aims to contribute valuable evidence to the ongoing debate surrounding clean air initiatives and their impacts on urban populations.
