A recent study published in The Lancet highlights a troubling trend regarding the impact of rising temperatures on older adults, particularly those aged 60 and above. Researchers from Stanford University assert that the dangers of extreme heat for this demographic have been significantly underestimated, with projections indicating that climate change will exacerbate the health risks faced by this vulnerable population.

Heat Exposure and Vulnerability

The study examined the effects of global warming on three distinct age groups: young adults (18-39 years), middle-aged adults (40-59 years), and seniors (60 years and older). The findings suggest that as global temperatures rise, an alarming 22% of the global older population could face “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This term refers to the natural physiological ability of the body to regulate temperature, indicating that many will struggle to cope with extreme heat levels.

Current data from NASA reveals that the Earth’s average temperature was around 2.14 degrees Fahrenheit (1.19°C) in 2025, and the year 2024 recorded the highest average temperatures to date, reaching 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28°C). These figures underscore the urgency of addressing climate change and its repercussions on public health.

Geographic Disparities in Heat Exposure

The study identifies regions particularly at risk, with India emerging as the country with the largest population subjected to extreme heat conditions. An estimated 648.4 million people in India currently endure over 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually, a condition anticipated to worsen with a 3°C increase in global temperatures. Countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger also face similar challenges, highlighting a pressing need for targeted interventions in these areas.

Alarmingly, the research indicates that over 10 million older adults worldwide—over 80% of the older population—experience at least 180 hours of heat limit exceedance each year. In South Asia and the Persian Gulf, there is a risk of these individuals facing sustained extreme heat for months on end, seriously jeopardising their health.

A Growing Older Population

The demographic landscape is shifting dramatically. The number of people aged 60 and older is expected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, constituting 21% of the global population. This rapid ageing trend poses significant challenges, as older adults are projected to face increasingly severe health risks due to climate change. The study notes that two-thirds of this population will likely reside in low- and middle-income countries, many of which are already grappling with the immediate effects of intense heat.

The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), reported a staggering 23% rise in heat-related mortality since the 1990s, resulting in approximately 546,000 deaths annually linked to extreme heat. The data also suggests that individuals were exposed to an average of 16 days of dangerous heat in 2024, with infants and older adults facing upwards of 20 such days—an alarming fourfold increase over the past two decades.

Implications for Public Health

The study’s findings reveal a critical oversight in past climate assessments, which often relied on data primarily from younger adults. This has led to an underestimation of the frequency and geographical spread of uncompensable heat stress, especially among older populations. As the climate crisis intensifies, it is imperative to incorporate the specific vulnerabilities of older adults into future health and climate strategies.
