Marijke Stor, a spokesperson for the Amsterdam police, noted, “We don’t really know how much he understands, and we have tried in various ways, but it’s not really possible in communication with him to find out who he really is.”
Lucky was without any personal identification at the time of his collapse, complicating the efforts to ascertain his identity. The investigation is classified as a “social investigation,” not a criminal one, as authorities are keen to connect him with someone who may know him, particularly family or friends. “We want to not only find out who he is, but also if there are any relatives who still love him and he could get in contact with,” Stor added, emphasizing the importance of human connection in his recovery.
From Local Leads to International Outreach
The initial investigation was carried out by the Amsterdam-West detective unit, which explored every possible avenue, including interviews with individuals who might have known Lucky in the area. However, as the case developed, it was transferred to a cold case team that could devote the required resources to this unique situation. Two retired detectives were assigned to map Lucky’s social network, which led them to discover that he was associated with a Buddhist community located on Middenweg in Amsterdam.
Further inquiries revealed that Lucky frequented a local restaurant, Soep en Zo, located on Waterlooplein, where he was known to patrons as “Chris the Canadian.” This nickname, along with accounts of his distinctive accent, led police to suspect he could have ties to North America.
A Public Appeal for Information
The police have released a video appeal to the public, specifically targeting those across the Atlantic, as they believe there is a chance someone in Canada could recognise him. “The people told us that he always spoke with what they called an American or a Canadian accent,” explained Stor. While cautioning that this does not definitively indicate Lucky’s nationality, she acknowledged that it remains a strong possibility.
Currently, Lucky is able to express a limited range of English words, such as “nonsense,” “definitely,” and “positive,” which he uses to respond to inquiries. Despite their best efforts, including the use of speech-generating devices, the investigators are still unsure about the extent of his comprehension.
Since the public appeal was made, the response has been overwhelming, with police receiving more than 500 tips—an unusually high number for such cases. “What we really want is that as many people as possible see the footage of Lucky, so that the chances of someone knowing him will see (the footage) are as big as possible,” Stor stated. “The chances of someone in Canada knowing who he is, we think, are there.”
International Cooperation in Investigation
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has acknowledged reports regarding the investigation into Lucky’s identity. They confirmed their collaboration with Dutch authorities through INTERPOL NCB Ottawa and the Mounties’ liaison officer programme, which facilitates international investigative efforts. However, due to privacy concerns, they have refrained from providing further details.
