East Greenland’s coastal waters are witnessing an unprecedented influx of giant whales, a phenomenon driven by the rapid decline of sea ice due to climate change. This significant ecological shift has been documented through extensive research spanning decades, revealing that humpback, fin, and minke whales are now frequenting areas that were previously locked away by ice.
New Feeding Grounds
Historically, these majestic marine mammals were barred from accessing East Greenland’s shores, which have now become a summer haven devoid of ice. Recent studies indicate that the warming seas have opened up new feeding opportunities, leading to what scientists are calling seasonal “feeding frenzies.” Observations made from research vessels have skyrocketed; there were no recorded sightings of humpback whales in the region until 2006. By 2024, that number surged to 150 sightings, highlighting a remarkable change in whale behaviour and distribution.
The first systematic aerial surveys of baleen whales conducted during the summers of 2015 and 2024 have further elucidated this trend. Researchers compiled data from these surveys, satellite tracking of 15 tagged whales, and insights from local Inuit hunters, culminating in the identification of what lead researcher Professor Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen describes as a “major ecological regime shift.”
Population Estimates and Implications
The summer of 2024 saw an estimated 4,000 humpback whales, 6,000 fin whales, and 6,000 minke whales populating the Greenland Sea. This influx is not just a random occurrence; it is directly linked to rising sea temperatures and enhanced food availability. The whales are reportedly feasting on fish that have migrated into these warmer waters, with estimates suggesting they may consume upwards of 800,000 tonnes of fish and krill during the feeding season.
However, while some whale species seem to be flourishing, others face grim prospects. The study raises questions about whether the increase indicates a true rise in whale populations or merely a shift from other regions. Experts express concern that this shift might involve whales migrating from West Greenland, a contentious issue given the hunting practices in the area.
