Earle believes that such innovations can revive interest in ocean exploration and inspire a new generation to engage with the sea. “Going deep is safer than flying, provided the operators are certified,” she insisted, aiming to alleviate public fears while promoting the importance of underwater research.

Despite advances in space exploration, Earle stresses that the deep ocean remains largely uncharted. With over 70% of the Earth covered in water, scientists have only scrutinised a mere 0.0001% of the deep sea, leaving countless mysteries unsolved. “The ocean is alive, yet we have systematically depleted its resources without fully understanding the consequences,” she lamented.

Earle highlighted the alarming loss of coral reef ecosystems, which have been decimated by human activity. “Half of the coral reefs are already gone, and it’s disheartening to see how our actions have threatened the very fabric of life that sustains us,” she stated.

The current political climate adds to her concerns, as controversial plans by the Trump administration to open protected waters for deep-sea mining and oil drilling threaten marine biodiversity. “These actions could devastate populations of beloved species and disrupt the balance necessary for ocean health,” Earle warned.

Earle’s message is not solely one of despair; she sees hope in the younger generations who are becoming increasingly aware of environmental challenges. “Today’s youth understand the problems we face, and they’re equipped with the knowledge that solutions exist. This is our best chance to shape a sustainable future,” she asserted.

In her view, preserving the ocean is not just an environmental issue but a matter of survival. Oceans are vital for producing the oxygen we breathe and act as a carbon sink, absorbing much of the greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.
