A photography instructor at a prestigious £56,000-a-year boarding school has received an indefinite ban from teaching after failing to disclose his engagement to a registered child sex offender. Thomas Ridgway, 31, worked at Heathfield School in Ascot, Berkshire, and did not inform his employers about his fiancé’s serious criminal history, which includes multiple convictions for sexual activity with a minor.
The Offences and Their Discovery
Ridgway’s partner was convicted on 19 June 2023 for ten counts of sexual activity with a minor, receiving an unspecified prison sentence on 6 December 2023. The school only became aware of these serious allegations on 15 December 2023, following an email from a concerned member of the public who reported “sexual assault against three boys.”
Despite his short tenure at the all-girls institution from September 2023 to February 2024, Ridgway’s case has raised significant concerns about safeguarding practices within educational environments. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel found that Ridgway showed neither remorse nor regret for his lack of disclosure, with the focus of his responses appearing to centre on his own predicament rather than the implications for student safety.
