Rising Heat Risks for Older Adults: A Wake-Up Call from Latest Study

A groundbreaking study published in The Lancet highlights an alarming oversight regarding the impact of extreme heat on individuals aged 60 and above. Researchers from Stanford University evaluated heat exposure across various age groups, revealing that global warming poses a significantly greater risk to older adults than previously acknowledged. As climate conditions worsen, the health of this vulnerable demographic is increasingly at stake.

Underestimating Vulnerability

The study indicates that should global temperatures rise by 1.5°C, a staggering 22 per cent of older adults worldwide could face “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This term refers to the body’s inability to cool down effectively in extreme heat, endangering the health and well-being of millions. Currently, the average global temperature for 2025 is estimated to be around 2.14 degrees Fahrenheit (1.19°C) according to NASA, with 2024 already recorded as the hottest year to date at 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28°C).

The researchers assert that as the planet continues to warm, it becomes critical to understand where, when, and to what extent heat exposure will surpass human tolerance levels. “Intolerable heat will be experienced at much larger scales and for longer durations, affecting far more people than previously thought,” the study warns.

Regions at Risk

The research highlights India as having the largest population subjected to extreme heat, with around 648.4 million people potentially encountering over 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually if temperatures rise by 3°C. Other countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger are also identified as facing significant threats due to their high levels of heat exposure.

The implications for older adults in these regions are dire. The study estimates that at least 10 million seniors—80 per cent of the older adult demographic—experience 180 hours or more of heat limit exceedance each year. In South Asia and the Persian Gulf, older adults could suffer from sustained exposure to extreme heat for three months or longer at a 3°C increase.

An Ageing Population

The global population of individuals aged 60 and over is projected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, constituting 21 per cent of the world’s total population. Most of this growth will occur in low- and middle-income countries, which are already grappling with the effects of heat stress. As the number of elderly individuals rises, so too does their susceptibility to the severe health risks posed by extreme temperatures.

The report from The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change further underscores an urgent need for action, noting that heat-related mortality has surged by 23 per cent since the 1990s, leading to an average of 546,000 heat-related deaths annually. In 2024, individuals were exposed to an average of 16 days of dangerous heat—an event that would have been unlikely without the influence of climate change—while older adults and infants faced over 20 heatwave days each, a fourfold increase compared to two decades ago.

The Need for Immediate Action

The findings of this study call for a significant shift in how we approach climate adaptation, particularly for older populations. Past assessments that focused primarily on younger adults may have severely underestimated the imminent threats posed by rising temperatures.

It is essential to create targeted interventions to protect vulnerable groups, particularly in regions most affected by heat stress. This includes developing community health programmes, enhancing infrastructure for cooling, and raising awareness about the risks associated with extreme heat.
