A recent study published in The Lancet has unveiled alarming insights about the impact of rising global temperatures on older adults, particularly those aged 60 and above. Conducted by researchers from Stanford University, the study suggests that the risks associated with extreme heat have been significantly underestimated for this demographic. As climate change continues to escalate, the consequences for our elderly population could be dire.
The Unfolding Crisis of Heat Stress
The research assessed how varying temperature thresholds affect different age groups, specifically focusing on young adults (ages 18-39), middle-aged individuals (ages 40-59), and seniors (60 years and older). The findings indicate that if global temperatures rise by 1.5°C, a staggering 22 per cent of the world’s senior population could face “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This term refers to the inability of the human body to cool itself effectively in extreme heat conditions.
Current data from NASA indicates that the average temperature of the Earth reached 2.14 degrees Fahrenheit (1.19°C) in 2025, while 2024 was recorded as the hottest year to date, at 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28°C). The study warns that as global temperatures rise, the scale and duration of intolerable heat will affect a far larger segment of the population than previously anticipated.
Regions at High Risk
The findings detail that India has the highest number of individuals exposed to what the study terms “uncompensable heat stress,” with an estimated 648.4 million people experiencing over 180 hours of such conditions annually if the planet warms by 3°C. Other countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger, also warrant significant concern due to their high exposure levels.
The research reveals that approximately 10 million older adults—80 per cent of the senior population in certain regions—experience at least 180 hours of heat limit exceedance each year. In parts of South Asia and the Persian Gulf, older individuals may endure sustained exposure to these extreme temperatures day and night for three consecutive months under a 3°C warming scenario.
A Worrying Demographic Shift
The study projects that the global population aged 60 and older will double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, constituting around 21 per cent of the world’s population. This demographic shift raises serious concerns as older adults are expected to face “disproportionately severe and imminent risks” due to climate change-related heat stresses.
Moreover, it is anticipated that over two-thirds of this ageing population will reside in low- and middle-income countries, many of which are already grappling with the brunt of climate impacts, including extreme heat.
Ignoring the Vulnerable
The researchers argue that past climate projections often overlooked the vulnerabilities of the ageing population, instead relying on data primarily derived from younger adults. As a result, the true scale and immediacy of the threat posed by uncompensable heat stress may have been significantly underestimated.
The 2025 report from the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), notes a 23 per cent increase in heat-related mortality since the 1990s, leading to an average of 546,000 heat-related deaths annually. In 2024 alone, the average individual encountered 16 days of dangerous heat that would not have occurred without climate change, with infants and older adults facing more than 20 heatwave days each—a staggering fourfold increase over the past two decades.
