As global temperatures continue to soar, a recent study published in The Lancet has highlighted the alarming impact of extreme heat on individuals aged 60 and above, revealing that the risks associated with climate change for this demographic have been significantly underestimated. Researchers from Stanford University evaluated how rising temperatures affect different age groups and found that if global warming reaches 1.5°C, over one-fifth of the world’s older population may suffer from conditions where their bodies can no longer effectively cool themselves.

The study underscores a pressing concern — the Earth’s average temperature is already on the rise, with NASA recording a 2025 average of 2.14 degrees Fahrenheit (1.19°C). The preceding year set a record high, with average temperatures hitting 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28°C). Other countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger, are also highlighted as areas of significant concern, exceeding both absolute and proportional exposure thresholds.
The study further indicates that at least 10 million older adults, accounting for approximately 80 per cent of the older population in certain regions, endure 180 hours or more of heat limit exceedance each year. In places like South Asia and the Persian Gulf, older adults could be subjected to relentless heat exposure for up to three consecutive months as temperatures rise.
The Demographic Shift
The implications of this research are magnified by the demographic trends indicating a rapidly ageing population. The number of individuals aged 60 and older is projected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, representing 21 per cent of the global populace.
