A recent study published in *The Lancet* underscores the alarming impact of extreme heat on individuals aged 60 and above, suggesting that the risks faced by this demographic have been largely underestimated. Researchers from Stanford University evaluated heat exposure limits across various age groups, revealing that as global temperatures continue to rise, older adults will increasingly find themselves vulnerable to conditions that their bodies struggle to manage.

Alarmingly High Heat Exposure Predictions

The findings indicate that if the global temperature increases by 1.5°C, an estimated 22% of the world’s older adult population will encounter “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This term refers to the inability of the human body to effectively cool itself in extreme heat. Presently, Earth’s average temperature stands at approximately 2.14°F (1.19°C) above pre-industrial levels, with projections showing that 2024 might be the hottest year recorded at 2.30°F (1.28°C) above that baseline, according to NASA.

The study’s authors stress the urgency of understanding the geographical and temporal scope of environmental conditions that will surpass human heat tolerance. “Intolerable heat will be experienced at much larger scales and for longer durations, affecting far more people than previously thought,” they noted.

Regional Disparities in Heat Stress

India emerges as a concerning focal point, with the largest population exposed to what is termed “uncompensable heat stress”—averaging at least 180 hours annually under 3°C warming. This translates to approximately 648.4 million people facing extreme heat conditions. The researchers highlight that countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger are also at significant risk, surpassing both absolute and proportional exposure thresholds.

Furthermore, it is estimated that over 10 million older adults, accounting for about 80% of the older population, will experience 180 hours or more of “heat limit exceedance” each year. Vulnerability is particularly pronounced in South Asia and the Persian Gulf, where older individuals may endure sustained exposure to high temperatures for three consecutive months as global warming escalates.

The Ageing Population and Future Risks

By 2050, the number of individuals aged 60 and over is expected to double from one billion in 2020 to approximately 2.1 billion, constituting 21% of the global population. This demographic shift poses “disproportionately severe and imminent risks” to older adults, particularly in low and middle-income countries, where a significant portion of this population resides. These regions are increasingly finding themselves on the frontline of heat stress, compounding the health risks associated with climate change.

The study highlights a critical oversight in previous climate projections, which often focused on young adults. Ignoring the unique vulnerabilities of the ageing population may have led to significant underestimations of the frequency, geographical spread, and immediacy of uncompensable heat stress.

Rising Heat-Related Mortality Rates

According to the 2025 report from the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, the rate of heat-related mortality has surged by 23% since the 1990s, resulting in an average of 546,000 deaths annually due to heat exposure. In 2024 alone, individuals encountered an average of 16 days of dangerous heat attributable to climate change. Alarmingly, infants and older adults experienced over 20 heatwave days per person, marking a fourfold increase in such occurrences over the past two decades.

Amidst these findings, experts urge that public health measures must adapt to the realities of a warming planet.
