A vibrant celebration of life unfolded on Thursday at Union United Church in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood, as family, friends, and admirers gathered to pay tribute to the iconic jazz pianist Oliver Jones. The atmosphere was filled with music, laughter, and poignant memories, honouring a man whose immense talent and generosity left an indelible mark on the jazz community.

A Life Rich in Music and Kindness

The service, infused with heartfelt emotions, featured Jones’ widow, Monique Leclerc Jones, who poignantly expressed her sorrow. “I am mourning an angel,” she shared, grappling with the difficulty of bidding farewell to someone who had been her life partner for 25 years. The outpouring of love was palpable as mourners reflected on the life of a man who had been playing the piano in that very church since the tender age of five.

Richard Jones, Oliver’s son, delivered a touching eulogy, reminiscing about their shared experiences and the joy his father brought to those around him. “I like to imagine my dad in heaven now… with a huge smile on his face, joyfully making music with all the other musicians that went before him,” he told the gathered crowd.

Celebrating a Musical Legacy

The ceremony highlighted Jones’ significant influence on the jazz scene, featuring performances by celebrated musicians such as Ranee Lee and Kim Richardson. As the Dr. Oliver Jones Trio took to the stage, they delivered one of his original compositions, “Lights of Burgundy.” Bassist Éric Lagacé, who collaborated with Jones for over a decade, remarked, “It’s great to have his music live on after him,” underscoring the enduring legacy of the beloved pianist.

Oliver Jones passed away on July 22 at the age of 91, leaving behind a rich tapestry of contributions to music and mentorship. His journey from the same humble Montreal neighbourhood as his friend and mentor Oscar Peterson was marked by a profound dedication to nurturing the local jazz scene. He was not only a member of the Order of Canada but also a cherished figure at the city’s International Jazz Festival, where he performed for many years. Alain Simard, the festival’s founder, expressed his admiration, stating, “He’s been a pillar. He had such humility and kindness, infinite kindness, and he couldn’t imagine that he would have that success.”

Remembering the Man Behind the Music

Jim West, a long-time friend and producer who collaborated with Jones since 1982, shared fond memories of their travels and musical journeys. He recounted an unforgettable tour in Africa where Jones took the initiative to organise concerts for children, a testament to his compassionate spirit. “It wasn’t part of the agenda; it was him saying, ‘I want this done. And to me, that’s him,’” West reflected.

Local political figures, including Guillaume Cliche-Rivard and Chantal Rouleau, were present to honour Jones’ legacy. Rouleau described him as “a kind man, a good man, and a great musician who made the city and Quebec shine around the world.” Cliche-Rivard emphasised the profound loss felt by the community, stating, “The whole community is in mourning.”

Outside the church, a crowd gathered to watch the service projected on screens, with Jones’ cousin, singer and guitarist Vance McKenzie, among those in attendance. “He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. He just was a pure person,” McKenzie remarked, highlighting the warmth of Jones’ character.

As the service drew to a close, the congregation erupted in cheers, singing and dancing to the uplifting music that filled the air. The emotional finale featured stirring renditions of “Amazing Grace” and “Hymn to Freedom,” encapsulating the collective spirit of love and gratitude as Montreal said its final goodbye to Oliver Jones.

Why it Matters

The passing of Oliver Jones marks a significant loss not just for the jazz community but for the cultural fabric of Montreal and Quebec as a whole. His life’s work transcended music, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring musicians. By championing the local scene and nurturing talent, he fostered a legacy that will resonate for generations. The heartfelt tributes and celebrations of his life reflect the profound impact he had on those around him, emphasising the importance of kindness and community in the arts.
