Passengers aboard TUI River Cruises are expressing their dissatisfaction after experiencing a series of troubling issues, including malfunctioning air conditioning and inadequate customer service. Reports indicate that many travellers have encountered uncomfortable conditions and plumbing problems while spending substantial sums on their holidays, raising concerns over the company’s operational standards.

Complaints from Passengers on Skyla and Isla

Earlier this year, holidaymakers aboard the Skyla, a TUI-operated vessel, reported being stranded in Budapest amidst a heatwave, with little to no functioning air conditioning. Following this revelation, additional passengers came forward with similar grievances regarding both the Skyla and its sister ship, Isla. Many of these travellers have voiced their frustration over TUI’s customer service, claiming that the refunds provided were insufficient.

TUI acknowledged the complaints, stating that they are aware of the disappointment experienced by affected customers. A spokesperson remarked, “We understand the disappointment and frustration caused to affected customers,” and assured that the company is committed to addressing these issues.

First-Hand Accounts of Discomfort

Andy Peach, who, along with his wife, spent nearly £4,000 on a seven-day cruise aboard the Skyla in June, described their experience as “the worst TUI holiday we’ve ever been on.” Instead of a properly functioning air conditioning system, Peach noted that the ship was equipped with large blowers that merely circulated warm air. He recounted how temperatures on board escalated, leaving him feeling utterly exhausted by the end of the trip. On the penultimate day, passengers were relocated to basic hotels due to the deteriorating conditions, yet the refund offered to Peach was only £300, to be accepted within 72 hours.

Joan Craven, who was set to embark on the Skyla shortly after Peach’s voyage, was also left feeling misled after receiving assurances from TUI’s customer service that the air conditioning was operational. Upon arrival, however, she was informed otherwise by a holiday representative, further compounding her concerns. Complaints about the Skyla’s air conditioning issues date back to as early as May.

Ongoing Issues with Isla

The Isla has not escaped scrutiny either. Wendy Charnley and her husband, who booked a cruise in April 2025 to celebrate her husband’s retirement, described the conditions as akin to “being in a tropical house at a zoo,” with little relief from the heat. Similarly, Kevin Darvill, who boarded the Isla in June, reported malfunctioning toilets and inadequate ventilation, stating that it was “intolerable” due to the lack of air circulation. He expressed disappointment that the cruise should not have proceeded given the known issues.

John Welsh, another passenger, reported that some toilets were out of order and described the ship as a “sweat box.” He recounted how crew members were visibly uncomfortable while working in the restaurant, and he felt his complaints were brushed aside. Although he accepted a £140 per person refund for the air conditioning failures, he declared he would not travel with TUI again.

An Underlying Crisis

The situation worsened during the summer months as low water levels on the Danube River compounded the problems. Tony Harper, who was due to set sail on 20 July, noted that the common areas emitted a foul smell and public toilets were inoperative throughout the voyage. While he acknowledged that low river levels were beyond the company’s control, he highlighted TUI’s poor communication and maintenance as areas of significant concern.

In response to the mounting complaints, TUI River Cruises stated that they faced “unexpected technical issues affecting air conditioning systems” and acknowledged the challenges posed by the extreme summer heat across Europe. The company has committed to investing in upgrades for its fleet’s air conditioning systems during the upcoming winter months.

Why it Matters

The ongoing issues faced by TUI River Cruises raise serious questions about the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction and operational integrity. As the travel industry emerges from the pandemic, maintaining high standards is crucial for restoring consumer confidence. The reported experiences of dissatisfied passengers underscore the importance of transparency and effective communication, particularly for premium services marketed at a luxury level. If these problems persist, they could have lasting repercussions for TUI’s reputation and its ability to attract future clientele.
