A groundbreaking trial has unveiled a personalised vaccine that, when combined with an existing immunotherapy drug, appears to significantly reduce the risk of melanoma recurrence in patients. Developed by pharmaceutical giants Merck & Co, also known as MSD in Europe, and Moderna, this innovative treatment offers new hope to those battling high-risk skin cancer following surgical intervention.
Trial Insights and Early Results
The trial involved over 1,000 patients diagnosed with high-risk melanoma, specifically those at stages two, three, or four, indicating a progression from localised large tumours to more advanced cancers that have metastasised. The vaccine, named Intismeran, was tested alongside Keytruda, an established immunotherapy that boosts the body’s immune response against cancer cells. Initial findings suggest that the combination significantly prolongs the duration patients remain cancer-free compared to using Keytruda alone, although specific timelines for these results are still pending.
Prof. Peter Johnson, the National Clinical Director for Cancer at NHS England, highlighted the significance of the findings during an interview with the BBC’s Today Programme. Dr Lennard Lee, a consultant medical oncologist and associate professor at the University of Oxford, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This is certainly good news for patients with melanoma, but the study has much wider implications. It provides proof of principle that personalised cancer vaccines work.”
