Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval played host to the second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games, where more than 2,000 machines from 16 nations took part in a five‑day showcase of running, table tennis, soccer, weightlifting and tug of war. The event, organised alongside the 2026 World Robot Conference, highlighted China’s rapid advances in robotics while underscoring the growing technological contest with the United States.

Record‑Breaking Performances on the Track and Field

On the opening day a humanoid robot built by Beijing‑based X‑Humanoid completed the 100‑metre sprint in 9.39 seconds, eclipsing Usain Bolt’s world‑record time of 9.58 seconds set in 2009. A separate trial run by a robot from smartphone maker Honor clocked an even faster 9.32 seconds, reaching a peak speed of 14.5 metres per second.

In the standing high jump the same X‑Humanoid machine cleared 2.88 metres, far above the human record of 2.45 metres established by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993 and well beyond the 0.95‑metre best achieved by a humanoid at last year’s inaugural games.

These feats were presented amid a synchronised march of hundreds of robots, a spectacle the organisers described as a demonstration of coordinated control and precision engineering.

Global Context: US‑China Tech Rivalry

The games unfolded just days after Beijing hosted the 2026 World Robot Conference, where roughly 3,000 products – including numerous humanoid models – were exhibited. Meanwhile, Washington has tightened scrutiny of Chinese robotics. Last month the Federal Communications Commission imposed a ban on imports of new foreign‑made humanoid robots, citing national security concerns that primarily affect Chinese manufacturers. The Pentagon also added Unitree, one of China’s leading humanoid‑robot firms, to its list of entities alleged to have ties with the Chinese military. Beijing has rejected the accusations, insisting the restrictions are unfounded.

Global Context: US‑China Tech Rivalry

Despite the geopolitical tension, the competition attracted teams from Germany, Japan and the United States, underscoring the event’s international appeal.

Beyond the Medal Table: What the Games Really Show

Organisers stressed that gold medals are not the ultimate aim for the participants. Experts note that humanoid robots remain principally tools for research, performance and demonstration, with widespread deployment in everyday environments still some years away. Spectators echoed this sentiment, marvelling at the machines’ accelerating capabilities while acknowledging the technology’s current limits.

Li Yanfeng, an education worker and Beijing resident, confessed she had once been wary of artificial intelligence but now feels compelled to witness its progress: “At first, I wasn’t very accepting of artificial intelligence. I was even a bit resistant to it, because of the possibility that it might replace or displace humans,” she said. “But now that I see this development is unstoppable, I decided to come and take a look.”

Yang Shangzheng, another onlooker, summed up the awe many felt: “These sports are perfectly normal for humans, but now robots can do them. I find it amazing.”

Liu Tao, who attended with his son, said he was eager to see “the best robots China currently has to offer.”
