A 41‑year‑old man from Eastbourne died and at least six others were taken to hospital after a large sign toppled over at the Big Church festival on the Wiston Estate on Friday afternoon. The incident prompted organisers to cancel the remainder of the event, which had been scheduled to run until Sunday.
Incident Details
Emergency services were called to the site near Steyning shortly after the sign gave way just after midday. The man, whose next of kin have been informed, was pronounced dead at the scene. Six additional attendees suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Witnesses described a sudden crash as the structure fell, sending panic through the crowds gathered for the Christian gathering.
Police and Organiser Response
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh of Sussex Police said, “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.” He added, “I recognise the immense distress this will have caused people at the festival, and we are working with a number of partners as we seek to establish exactly what happened. We know there were thousands of people at the festival and we’re urging anyone with any information, or any relevant video footage, to please come forward.”
Festival organisers posted on Instagram shortly after 5.30 p.m. announcing that the show had been cancelled and instructing all day visitors to leave the site immediately. In a later statement they said, “We are devastated by the serious incident that took place at Big Church festival 2026 today, in which a sign fell, injuring at least seven people, one of whom tragically lost their life.” The statement continued, “First and foremost, all of our thoughts are with those who have been affected, their families and friends, and everyone who witnessed what happened. Following today’s incident, we have made the decision to bring Big Church festival 2026 to a close.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have notified the Health and Safety Executive and the local authority about the collapse. Police remain on site to gather evidence and have appealed for any footage or information that might help determine why the sign failed. The investigation will examine the design, installation and maintenance of the structure, as well as crowd management measures in place at the time of the accident.
