In a job market increasingly shaped by automation, a surprising counter-trend is emerging: young professionals are turning away from digital careers and embracing centuries-old trades such as bookbinding, metalwork, and boatbuilding. What was once considered a niche pursuit is now being framed as a strategic career move—craft skills that artificial intelligence cannot easily replicate.
Eryn Lawley, a 27-year-old politics graduate, is part of this quiet revolution. She abandoned plans for a conventional office career to train as a bookbinder at Ludlow Bookbinders in Shropshire, where she is now in her second year of apprenticeship. The trade she is learning has barely changed in fundamental technique since the Victorian era.
“Even just staring at a screen too long was bad for me,” Lawley explained. “I always wanted to do something more material, and I think there is something more inherently valuable to something when it is made by a person.”
The practical appeal extends beyond personal preference. For many young workers entering an employment landscape where white-collar roles face disruption across sectors—from junior legal positions to entry-level software development—heritage crafts represent a form of career insurance. These trades demand specialist knowledge built on creative judgment and manual dexterity, skills that remain stubbornly difficult for AI systems to master.
Paul Kidson, chief executive of Ludlow Bookbinders and a fourth-generation practitioner of the craft, describes the recent influx of young apprentices as a lifeline for an industry that has been shrinking for decades. He estimates fewer than 50 handcraft-operating bookbinders remain active in Britain today.
“British bookbinding has a terrific reputation across the world, but like so many things in the 50s, 60s and 70s, the training just started to dry up,” Kidson said. “All the formal apprentice schemes collapsed in the early 1980s, and the industry got no training at all.”
The situation required an industry-wide adaptation. “We have to train our own people because you can’t recruit at volume because there aren’t any [courses]. Fortunately there is now a desire among a lot of people to want to have the satisfaction of actually making something.”
Commercial Viability in an Automated World
The market for handmade goods has proved more resilient than many predicted. High-end publishers are betting that consumers will pay premium prices for objects crafted by human hands rather than produced by machines.
Joanna Reynolds, chief executive of the Folio Society—a prestigious book publisher that partnered with Ludlow Bookbinders for a limited-edition release of a Game of Thrones volume—emphasised her company’s commitment to traditional methods. “We do not use AI in terms of our art,” she stated. “We believe in the importance of supporting the creative world, and we know there is huge pressure on them at the moment. Their skills and their abilities need to be supported by as many people as possible.”
The commercial logic is straightforward: as mass production becomes cheaper and faster through automation, the premium attached to bespoke craftsmanship increases. Publishers, furniture makers, and luxury goods manufacturers find themselves competing for access to a diminishing pool of skilled traditional practitioners.
At Cox London, a design house specialising in artistic metalwork, the apprenticeship programme launched only last year. The response exceeded all expectations. Nicola Cox, a co-founder, revealed that the company received more than 160 applications for just two apprenticeship places this year—a ratio that would be remarkable in any sector.
“People want to make things and work with materials, [to] have that closeness with it,” Cox observed. “There is AI-proofness about art that is made with someone’s hands. There is a real resonance in something that has a mark and the energy of human hands.”
Lucky Emerson, currently completing an apprenticeship at Cox London, articulates a sentiment increasingly common among young creative workers: anxiety about AI’s encroachment into traditionally human domains, combined with confidence that physical craft skills will retain value. “The physicality of actually making things is incomparable, especially when people crave originality. Even though technology has advanced, handcrafted art is considered a lot more valuable and will always remain that way.”
Nazifa Tabassum, also apprenticing at Cox London, offers a more nuanced perspective. She does not view AI as a threat to her chosen craft but rather as a potential complement. “For me it isn’t just about making things with my hands,” she said. “It’s about continuously developing my skills, and using technology where it adds value, while still providing the expertise and craftsmanship that people can’t easily automate. I see AI as a tool that can assist, but not something that replaces, the satisfaction and value of skilled manual, handcrafted work.”
Preserving Vanishing Skills at the National Theatre
The challenge of maintaining heritage skills is perhaps most acute in theatre, where traditional crafts—from wig-making to prop construction—have been passed down through apprenticeship for generations, yet now face an existential training gap.

At the National Theatre in London, technical apprenticeships span everything from IT systems to the most traditional of handcrafts: wig-making, costume design, prop-making, and metalwork. Kath Geraghty, head of technical qualifications at the institution, explains the dual purpose of these programmes.
“Our apprenticeships are partly about the need to create a more representative workforce, both for the National Theatre and for the [wider] creative sector,” Geraghty said. “It is also about plugging the skill gap. These theatre crafts are dying out—our metalworkers are all over 50, wig-making as a skill is really dying. There’s a real need to create our own talent.”
The initiative extends beyond the National Theatre’s immediate requirements. “And it’s always been about creating a skilled workforce for the wider creative sector beyond theatre, such as film, TV and broadcast.”
Sarah Ray-Dobson, a 27-year-old apprentice prop-maker at the National Theatre, has observed a clear distinction between her hands-on practice and the AI disruption affecting other creative fields. “Everything I’ve been doing for the past two years is very hands-on. At my level, it has not been affected by AI.”
Yet the broader context remains challenging. Geraghty acknowledges that, like many employers, the National Theatre now faces an overwhelming volume of applications—many generated with AI assistance. “We used to think that 100 applicants was a popular apprenticeship. In this most recent round of recruitment, we had 728 applications for one role. We haven’t yet worked out how to manage it, because it’s not viable for our staff to read 700 applications with care and attention. But the job market that young people are in is difficult, and they are applying for anything they can.”
Why it Matters
The revival of heritage crafts reflects a deeper re-evaluation of what constitutes valuable work in an age of artificial intelligence. While technology continues to transform industries from finance to creative writing, trades that demand physical dexterity, tacit knowledge, and bespoke creative judgment appear to offer genuine career security. For employers from luxury publishers to national cultural institutions, the challenge is not merely finding apprentices willing to learn these skills but rebuilding the infrastructure of training that collapsed over four decades. The question is whether this renewed interest can sustain industries that have been shrinking for a generation—and whether a generation of young workers, burned by the instability of digital careers, will prove patient enough to master trades that take years to learn but offer decades of employment. The answer will shape not only individual careers but the very nature of British craft heritage.
