CD Projekt Red has announced a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past, slated for release in 2027. The add‑on will launch alongside a free remaster of the original game for anyone who purchased it in 2015, and it has been developed in partnership with Fool’s Theory, a studio founded by veteran CD Projekt Red staff.
A Tale Long Kept in the Drawer
Marcin Blacha, the studio’s VP story director, revealed that the narrative had been sitting unused for years. “We’ve had this story in a drawer for many years,” he said, explaining that the team waited for a gap in the release calendar before committing to the project. The expansion sees Geralt drawn out of retirement in Toussaint when his old friend Dandelion asks for help in the seemingly idyllic land of Letten, which hides darker secrets beneath its festivals and harvests.
Partnership and Development Details
Fool’s Theory took on the bulk of the development work, allowing CD Projekt Red to focus on other programmes such as Cyberpunk 2077 and the forthcoming Witcher 4, which is not expected until 2028. Blacha noted that the collaboration made it possible to honour the original tone while introducing fresh mechanics. Returning voice actors Doug Cockle and John Schwab will reprise their roles as Geralt and Dandelion, preserving the series’ familiar auditory signature.
What Players Can Expect
Songs of the Past will feature an upgraded combat system, including a new chain weapon that sits alongside Geralt’s steel and silver swords. Players will also be able to experiment with DNA‑modifying mutagens that tweak the witcher’s biology and supernatural abilities. The expansion aims to revisit the franchise’s roots by drawing on old Slavic folklore, Polish landscapes and the series’ trademark moral dilemmas, all while avoiding any prequel connections to Witcher 4’s storyline centred on Ciri.
