Cats have long been branded as aloof, mysterious creatures – the independent sort who tolerate humans rather than truly love them. But emerging neuroscience suggests the connection runs far deeper than a bowl of dinner and a warm lap. At the heart of it all lies a powerful chemical messenger: oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which appears to bind humans and their feline companions in ways scientists are only beginning to unravel.
The Chemistry of Connection
Oxytocin is no stranger to scientists studying human behaviour. It surges during childbirth, breastfeeding, hugs and moments of deep trust, earning its reputation as the body’s primary bonding chemical. A landmark 2005 experiment demonstrated that oxytocin made human participants markedly more willing to trust strangers in financial games – proof of its profound influence over social behaviour.
Beyond bonding, the hormone exerts a calming influence on the nervous system. It suppresses cortisol, the body’s chief stress hormone, and activates the parasympathetic system, often described as the “rest and digest” response. The result is a tangible sense of safety – and it works across species.
Researchers have spent years documenting how friendly interactions trigger oxytocin release in dogs and their owners, creating a mutually reinforcing feedback loop of affection. Cats, however, were long overlooked. Their subtle expressions of warmth were dismissed as indifference. New studies are now correcting that narrative.
A Softer Kind of Love
Dog owners are famously vocal about their pets’ devotion. Cat owners, by contrast, often struggle to explain the quiet, persistent comfort their animals provide. Science is starting to validate those feelings.

In 2021, researchers in Japan measured oxytocin levels in women after brief petting sessions with their cats. The results were striking: gentle stroking and soft-spoken interaction corresponded with elevated oxytocin in the owners’ saliva, far higher than levels recorded during a quiet resting period without the cat present. The act of petting – and even the sound of a low, rumbling purr – appears to nudge the brain into releasing its own feel-good chemistry.
A separate 2002 study found that this oxytocin response from gentle cat contact can lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure and even ease physical pain. In other words, that purring creature curled on your lap may be doing far more than simply keeping you company.
When the Bond Works – and When It Doesn’t
Not every cat-human interaction produces the same hormonal reward. A February 2025 study offered a fascinating window into the mechanics of feline attachment.
Researchers monitored oxytocin levels in cats during 15-minute sessions of play and cuddling at home. The findings were telling: securely attached cats who initiated contact – hopping onto a lap, nudging a hand, pressing close – showed clear oxytocin surges. The longer they stayed near their humans, the greater the boost.
Cats with more anxious attachment styles told a different story. Those who constantly sought their owners but were easily overwhelmed by handling began with already elevated oxytocin, which then dropped sharply after any forced cuddle. Avoidant cats, the ones who kept their distance throughout, showed no significant change at all.
The takeaway is unambiguous: when interactions respect a cat’s comfort, the bonding hormone flows freely. When an animal feels cornered, that chemical bridge simply does not form.
Reading the Subtle Signs
Cats communicate affection differently from dogs. Prolonged eye contact, a staple of canine bonding, can actually feel threatening to a feline. Instead, cats rely on gentler signals – the most famous being the slow blink, widely interpreted as a smile of trust.

Purring, too, carries a biochemical message. The low-frequency vibrations of a cat’s purr have been linked to healing properties in the animal itself, but they also appear to calm the humans nearby, lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Oxytocin mediates much of that benefit, transforming a simple purr into a small dose of therapy.
That daily accumulation of oxytocin, researchers suggest, can act as a buffer against anxiety and depression – in some instances offering comfort comparable to human social support. It is a quieter, less demonstrative form of companionship, but no less meaningful for it.
Are Dogs Really More Loving?
A commonly cited 2016 experiment compared oxytocin responses in dogs and cats after ten minutes of play with their owners. Dogs registered an average spike of 57 per cent, while cats managed around 12 per cent. On paper, dogs appear to be the more enthusiastic partners.
But the comparison is somewhat misleading. Cats have evolved subtler bonding strategies, ones that unfold over longer timescales and reward patience rather than exuberance. A 12 per cent oxytocin increase, sustained across years of shared routines, can rival the dramatic peaks of more demonstrative relationships.
